Recently some NineDotters got together for a dinner celebrating our company’s diversity team and programs, and to kick off planning for 2025! At NineDot, we believe it’s important to be diverse like the great city of New York, our home base, as that’s a source of our growth and strength. This approach is also captured in one of our corporate values called YOU – “we strive to do the right thing by our colleagues, business partners, and the communities we serve, valuing a diverse and inclusive environment that provides opportunities for all to thrive inside and outside our organization”. #community #energytransition #teamwork

Creating distributed clean energy solutions for the urban grid
About us
NineDot Energy creates innovative energy solutions that make the urban grid cleaner, more equitable, more resilient and less costly. Our current development focus is on building and operating battery storage sites in the New York City metropolitan area, including Westchester and Long Island. We are working to enable vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities at our projects as well. The NineDot Energy name derives from the classic mathematical puzzle for sparking out-of-the-box solutions. Our “outside the box” creativity combines business model innovation and community-centered solutions to catalyze clean energy projects in high-value parts of the electric utility grid. Based at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering Urban Future Lab in Brooklyn, New York. We have received financial support from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency (NYSERDA) and the Carlyle investment group, among others.

Today we announced 📰 the recent closing of our $65 million equipment financing transaction. Thanks to First Citizens Bank, a leader in renewable energy finance, for spearheading the deal. This financing supports the purchase of nearly 100 Megawatts (MW) / 400 Megawatt hours (MWh) of batteries 🔋 for use in up to 20 storage projects across the New York City 🗽 metro area! As David Arfin, NineDot’s CEO said, “for New York to achieve its sustainability goals, we know that battery storage is a critical enabler. First Citizens Bank understands this need and opportunity well, and we’re thrilled to have them provide this equipment financing that affirms NineDot’s vision and execution capability.” With this transaction, NineDot has raised over $500 million in total capital, dedicated to supporting New York’s #energytransition. #cleanenergyfinancing #batterystorage #energyfunding https://lnkd.in/g8j-ym4K

Recently NineDot sat down with the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy | U.S. Department of Energy to discuss what it takes to be a clean energy innovator. The answer is -- it takes many things! -- including creativity, boldness, partnerships, thinking outside the box, funding and resources, such as what’s provided by agencies like the DOE. In fact, David Arfin and Adam Cohen, two of our co-founders, met through their involvement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) SunShot Initiative, which ultimately delivered an early grant to the company that became NineDot Energy. In this brief video, see how David and Adam describe some of the philosophy behind NineDot’s vision. https://lnkd.in/eS39_inK #BatteryStorage #SustainableEntrepreneurship #AdvancedbyAmericans

Congratulations and thank you to the Urban Future Lab team for the great work you've done over the years, including Pat Sapinsley and Emily Wheeler! Two of NineDot's co-founders -- David Arfin and Adam Cohen -- shared a desk there way back in 2018. Now we are 70 employees and growing, and the UFL still provides us with a perfect space and ecosystem for collaboration, innovation, and accelerating the NYC #energytransition. It was an honor for David to give a toast at this wonderful gathering.
Last week, we celebrated 15 years of NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s Future Labs at public records featuring several speakers who extolled the impact the network has had on #NewYorkCity. Thank you NY Green Bank for supporting NineDot and others as we work to make NYC's grid more efficient and sustainable! #batterystorage
🔋 Connecting new energy projects to the power grid—known as the interconnection (IX) process—is essential for the green transition. NY Green Bank’s financing of IX deposits, including NineDot Energy’s distributed storage systems in NYC, enables more efficient use of capital and helps projects progress through the IX queue, connecting to the grid and supporting a more resilient energy system. Thank you Daniel Guetta and team for inviting us to join you at Columbia Business School this week! NineDot is grateful that so many schools and students in the NYC area want to learn about the #energytransition (and #batterystorage). We loved having the opportunity to share NineDot Energy's journey and mission with the Columbia community.
Continuing the conversation from class, Professors Daniel Guetta, Omar Besbes, and Bruce Usher moderated an inspiring fireside chat hosted by DFI on Monday night with NineDot Energy's co-founder, Adam Cohen, and his team, Columbia alumni Olivia Booth-Howe, and Bobby Sciortino. They discussed the future of clean energy in NYC, highlighting how their initiatives are creating a cleaner, more resilient, equitable and cost-effective energy landscape for our community. Thank you to everyone who joined us in exploring these vital topics!

NineDotters are grateful for the opportunity to give back this Thanksgiving season. Last week, NineDotters volunteered at Materials for the Arts, New York City's premier creative reuse center. MFTA collects surplus materials and redistributes them, for free, to NYC arts nonprofits, public schools, and City agencies with arts programming. We had the privilege of working together to unpack and organize goods in their warehouse—an essential task that helps MFTA continue its incredible work. Volunteers are key to keeping everything running smoothly, and we're proud to support such a valuable resource for the community. #Sustainability #ClimateAction #CommunityImpact

Last night, NineDot CEO and co-founder David Arfin spoke to students, faculty, alumni, and industry professionals as part of the NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate Distinguished Speaker Series. David answered students’ thoughtful questions around siting, safety, end of life considerations for battery sites, and the supply chain. There was such a clean energy buzz when the presentation was done that eventually everyone had to be redirected to the bar to continue the conversation! 🔋🍻 Thank you to Matthew Kwatinetz and the team for hosting — we're lucky to have NYU Schack training the next generation of sustainable real estate developers. #Sustainability #ClimateInfrastructure #RealEstateDevelopment #EnergyTransition #NYC #ClimateResilience #CleanEnergy

This month marks NineDot's 9th anniversary, a time to reflect on our journey from an idea to a recognized leader in urban energy solutions for New York City. Here’s a look at some of our key milestones: 🔋 2015-2019: Founded as CertainSolar and backed by a $490,000 matching grant from the @Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative, co-founders Adam Cohen, David Arfin, and Nalin Kulatilaka began with the idea of locking in solar pricing so it’s always cheaper than electric utility pricing. 🔋 2020-2022: After completing two fuel-cell energy projects in high need locations, we became NineDot Energy, reflecting our new focus on building community energy sites for the NYC area. We received our initial growth capital from The Carlyle Group, and in August 2022, celebrated the ribbon-cutting of our first community battery site in New York City, attended by leaders from NYSERDA, Con Edison, the New York Public Service Commission, and Bronx Borough President Hon. Vanessa L. Gibson, MPA (She, Her, Hers, Ella). 🔋 2023: Our battery site in the Northeast Bronx went live, Starbucks joined as our anchor subscriber, and NineDot was ranked #5 on Crain's New York Business list of 100 Best Places to Work. We also secured additional financing from NY Green Bank and we built a wonderful community partnership with the Bronx Charter School for Better Learning. 🔋 2024: This year, we garnered an additional $225 million equity commitment from Manulife Investment Management and Carlyle, doubled our credit facility with NYGB, closed our first tax equity financing of more than $40 million, and were honored by the New York League of Conservation Voters. With a number of new NYC battery sites in construction, and more than 50 projects overall in some phase of development, we are also preparing to pilot EV charging and mobile battery programs. So where are we today? With almost 70 employees and approximately $450 million in capital, we are fully committed to supporting a cleaner, more resilient and reliable power grid for the New York City metro area, and are grateful for all the partners, suppliers, regulators, communities, elected officials and others in the energy ecosystem that are working together to make New York’s energy transition happen. #NineDotEnergy #CleanEnergy #NYCEnergy #BatteryStorage
