Each year, the federal government and philanthropic institutions invest substantial resources to support Americans’ economic mobility. In our new report, the third in the Mobility Experiences series, we provide a comprehensive overview of economic mobility funding and identify opportunities to boost impact. Our report draws upon an analysis of federal budget data and nearly 100,000 grants from the nation’s largest philanthropic institutions to calculate spending across different Mobility Experiences. These are the life experiences, such as completing postsecondary education and accessing healthcare, that have the greatest impact on lifetime income. In our earlier research, we calculated the relative financial impact of the leading Mobility Experiences and surveyed thousands of Americans to understand public demand for each. By cross-referencing this data, our new report identifies areas where the federal government and philanthropic institutions can most effectively boost economic mobility by supporting highly impactful and in-demand Experiences. 🧠 Managing stress and anxiety while navigating new motherhood is difficult and can put a significant strain on women's mental health. This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we're highlighting our pilot program in 🇪🇹 #Ethiopia, Mothers' Time, which addresses these challenges using a simplified version of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). The CCP-led Breakthrough ACTION project intervention offers tools to help postpartum women cope with anxiety and depression, which could help them overcome barriers to adopting family planning. "Depression and anxiety affect so many of the behaviors and skills that are important in the process of considering family planning use and acting on one’s fertility intentions. So, might feelings of depression and anxiety be getting in the way of those decisions?" says Breakthrough ACTION’s Sarah Burgess. If you are attending the #ProsperitySummit2024, come see Camber Collective’s Marc Allen and Morgan DeLuce speak about our work on #economicmobility If you can’t make it, please check out the research at https://lnkd.in/gC83MfmK!
Looking forward to seeing many of you at this week's #ProsperitySummit2024. I'll be speaking with Morgan DeLuce and Ivory Bennett, M.Ed. on Thursday afternoon about Camber Collective's research into the life experiences that determine #economicmobility. Economic mobility is typically the result of multiple enabling experiences accumulating from birth through adulthood. We're privileged to be able to fill in some of the gaps in evidence around these experiences and to elevate the stories of those whose economic opportunity has been shaped by their access to, or deprival of, them. In this session, we'll explore data on the varying income effects of these experiences; which ones matter most to Americans (especially those experiencing economic exclusion); and which experiences people need most support in accessing. As our partner in this work, Kimberly Brown, has always reminded us: it might be an idea to listen to people experiencing poverty, when we're trying to understand the reasons for it. We will shortly begin providing technical and strategic assistance to local agencies, funders, and program delivery organizations interested in applying this research to inform their policies and programs, funding, and narrative efforts. Please sign up for updates at MobilityExperiences.org to learn more!

Join us on Wednesday, August 7th, for a conversation and Q&A on Americans' perspectives on economic mobility. The webinar will unpack the findings of our new Mobility Experiences report, which draws upon the results of a national survey of over 4,000 Americans—including an oversample of lower-income Americans—on economic mobility and the life experiences that have the greatest impact on lifetime income. The Mobility Experiences series, made possible with financial support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, works to provide key stakeholders with the information they need to more effectively give all Americans the opportunity for a better life.

Our team has partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation on the Mobility Experiences research series, which examines how we can boost economic mobility by fostering the life experiences that have the greatest impact on lifetime income. In our second report, we examine the results of a national economic mobility survey of over 4,000 Americans. The key findings include: - Nearly 70% of Americans believe in upward mobility for others, but less than 50% believe their own economic situation will improve over the next five years - Roughly 60% of Black Americans and half of Hispanic Americans believe their race impacts their economic status - Americans strongly support interventions to help with career advancement, education, and physical and mental health - Americans' beliefs about what most impacts economic mobility are often at odds with empirical research findings Economic mobility has steadily declined in the U.S. since the 1940s. By better understanding the experiences that have the greatest impact, and how they’re perceived by the public, we can more effectively give all Americans the opportunity for a better life.
