🏔️ Looking Back at Cascading’s History 🏔️ Cascading has been going through a remarkable change. This called for a moment of reflection for how we got here and gratitude for those who transformed us along the way. Although we shifted some things around, Cascading’s core vision remains the same: mobilizing businesses as a force for Life. Reflecting back on the history of Cascading brings us back to its deep origins—the mountains of Sierra Madre Oriental that witnessed the rise and fall of different civilizations, and most recently, a growing city, where our founder Carolina Fdz Jansink grew up. Every business has a personal motivation, a reason to exist, and a story to tell. Last year, Carolina Fdz Jansink was so fortunate to have participated in Project Positive, an initiative launched by Biomimicry 3.8. The gathering took place in Montana, where alongside other Life-conducive minds and hearts, worked together to raise the bar on what acting sustainably means through Biomimicry and Positive Performance. ❣ No matter the setting, “when a city [or manufacturing site] is functionally indistinguishable from the #forest or wild lands next door, we’ve reached true #sustainability,” shares Janine Benyus, co-founder of Biomimicry 3.8. 🦋 What the Great Flight of the Monarch Inspired How fitting for our co-created NERD Jam sessions to highlight the majestic Monarch Butterfly, as the Monarch Butterfly makes an impressive 3000-mile (4828 km) migratory journey from Minnesota, where Lichen Labs LLC is located, to an area in the Sierra Madre mountains, west of Mexico City, where Nature Design Lab is located. 🏔 🔬 One of the NERD Jam sessions was aptly named “The Great Flight of the Monarch,” where we explored portions of the Monarch under an electron microscope. Biomimicry professionals, women in leadership positions, industrial designers, or architects—it didn’t matter what positions the group held, the discussions were also lively with lots of ideas and practical applications in human-used designs. One idea that sprang from the Monarch’s wings was to change the color of plastic bottles with texture creating “structural color” to make any color more recyclable. “Holy cow!” 😲 “How does it do that?!” 😳 These were exclamations of curious participants of the NERD Jam session from the MINNESOTA MICROSCOPY SOCIETY (MMS) during the exploration of how the fishing #spider, genus #Dolomedes, lives near, dives in, and breathes in #water. 🕷 Take a look at the image below of the fishing spider’s legs. What does it inspire in you? “None had looked at nature in this way before, despite their knowledge of electron microscopy, [as these] instruments are not usually used with the arrangements presented in organic sample examination or directed in understanding the organism as a natural device.” The electron microscope offered a whole new way of viewing Life’s brilliant design of the fishing spider’s form, function, and #elegance. When we love a place, we naturally want to nurture and protect it. Knowing the rivers that quench our thirst, the earth that grows our food, the forests that shade our heads make a place a home. Without the recognition of place, regeneration cannot begin. 🌲 🌲 In the middle of the Appalachian Piedmont forests, just 15 minutes from where Cascading’s founder Carolina Fdz Jansink lives, the 2024 Biophilic Leadership Summit chose the topic of #Biophilic #Placemaking. There, Carolina shared a workshop on engaging the private sector in Placemaking projects. Discussing why, when, and how to engage the private sector in projects of #rewilding and urban design brought us closer to the place we want to make better, to feel more like home. We really appreciated the emphasis of bringing more diverse private sector leaders into the collective consciousness of #biophilia in placemaking projects and living building designs. As part of the vast #ecosystem of any place, businesses can play a strong contributing role in catalyzing the project. 🦋 How could you bring biophilia into your business? Cascading was very excited to be invited by the Universidad para la Cooperación Internacional for the 4th consecutive year to be a guest teacher and speaker for the Certificate in #Regenerative #Entrepreneurship in Spanish. 🌿 Last week, we hosted two #workshops for the English version of the Certificate to support student's projects and their business models. From Italy to continental US, Colombia to the UK, UCI students come from different #bioregions, continents, and backgrounds. 💡 As always, it is a pleasure to talk to the students of this program, listening to their projects and exploring their well-informed and deep questions about regenerative business. 📣 The next iteration of the Certificate in Regenerative Entrepreneurship in Spanish will be starting on November 6th, 2025.
