Well, BIG news from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau today as they have finally dropped the hammer on overdraft fees. This is especially concerning for California FIs where they just passed a law that would match this pricing for ALL institutions, not just those over $10B in assets. I think free checking is finally going to bite the dust, and we will likely see new pricing implemented for a variety of services that have been free in the past. How this all shakes out for FIs smaller than $10B is still in flux, but the writing is on the wall, if your bank or credit union depends on overdraft income for profitability, you MUST chart a new path forward.
