In 2024, deepfakes and AI-generated content became a major concern, with rising visibility in both mainstream and social media. Insights from the Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS) report show that while AI-driven disinformation didn’t directly impact U.S. election outcomes, it played a significant role in amplifying false narratives and fueling political debates. AI bots, many linked to Russia and China, spread misinformation on key issues and targeted candidates with smear campaigns and/or favorable coverage. Findings in the United States Department of Defense’s Military and Security Developments Involving China 2024 report to Congress highlight how China increasingly uses AI for digital influence, with the PLA leveraging deepfakes to sway public opinion and disrupt democracies. Is your business ready to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars to deepfake scams? 💸 ⏳ 🔎 Recent findings from Regula's "Deepfake Trends 2024" survey highlight the ongoing and escalating issue of financial deepfake fraud. Organizations face average losses of $450,000, with the financial services sector reporting even higher losses, averaging $603,000. Even more concerning, while 56% of businesses feel confident in detecting deepfakes, only 6% have successfully avoided financial losses 💰 📈 . Many of these incidents occur during live video or audio calls, where fraudsters use advanced deepfake technology to impersonate high-level executives in real time. In most cases, the scam is only uncovered because the impersonator makes a small mistake—revealing the deception. Even though many large businesses have biometric and authentication protocols in place, it’s clear that incorporating deepfake detection and analysis into these systems is now essential. In addition to the gap in live detection capabilities, another critical issue is the lack of explainability around these incidents. Many companies are left scrambling to understand what happened after the fact. Often, they either never fully uncover the truth or simply sweep the issue under the rug, losing significant sums of money in the process. This is where we come in.
