This winter season, when we reach for our warm cups of tea to help beat the cold December days, let’s ensure that we also contribute to the environment holistically and look for sustainable solutions to common problems. Tea bags often include non-biodegradable plastic materials that are non-compostable and can contribute towards the accumulation of micro-plastics in soil and waterbodies when discarded inefficiently. This can be extremely harmful to human and animal health, as well as detrimental to various ecosystems. This brewing environmental hazard can be neutralised by swapping your tea bags with loose tea leaves that you can store in any metal container. These are additionally easy to compost, which in turn improves soil health, boosting overall productivity. As we reach the end of the year, let us pledge to continue to take small steps towards sustainable living, now, and in the new year. CWS wishes you a very happy festive season! #sustainable #winter #festiveseason #december #climateaction GIZ India Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action European Commission MoEF&CC Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Swachh Bharat Urban Swachh Survekshan

Transforming Waste to Art: Panaji's 'Plastic Turtle' Raises Awareness about Plastic Pollution To raise awareness about the effects of plastic pollution on the environment, the Corporation of the City of Panaji, Goa, in collaboration with the Circular Waste Solutions project, implemented by GIZ, recently inaugurated a waste-to-art ‘Plastic Turtle’ installation. Made entirely of waste materials such as plastic bottles, it serves as a reminder of the effects of plastic pollution on the environment Plastic pollution is a threat to our biodiversity, endangering marine ecosystems and contaminating water bodies, which may eventually lead to habitat destruction. There are several easy yet essential ways to deal with plastic waste such as choosing sustainable alternatives to single-use plastics and practicing source segregation at home. Source segregation allows for the easier identification of dry recyclables, thus stops them from polluting the environment. According to a 2019-20 Central Pollution Control Board report, India generates 3.5 million metric tonnes of plastic waste annually. Toxins from accumulated SUP waste can leach into the ground, poisoning the underground water table and the surrounding soil. Since 2022, SUPs have been banned in India, but we can do much more to expedite our transition away from it. This #November, let’s consciously pledge to swap SUP items with sustainable, durable, environmentally friendly, and long-lasting alternatives made from eco-friendly materials like glass, bamboo, or metal to support India’s efforts toward a cleaner and greener tomorrow. #MitigationActionFacility #singleuseplasticfree #ecofriendly #sustainable GIZ India Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action European Commission MoEF&CC Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Swachh Bharat Mission Swachh Bharat Urban Swachh Survekshan

#October is the month of #festivals in #India, and as we gear up to celebrate with our friends and family let’s pledge to make our festivities more sustainable by adopting a few simple eco-friendly steps. #Gifting can go green this season with biodegradable, natural packaging materials such as banana leaves or reusable jute gift bags as #sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic packaging. Additionally, while favouring biodegradable decorations such as flowers and garlands to decorate your spaces is a good and environmentally mindful practice, consider taking this a step further and composting them after use. This is a simple and impactful practice to reduce waste, conserve natural resources, and yield nutrient-rich compost that is increasingly beneficial for soil health. Crucial steps to give back to our #environment in the midst of our celebrations! Bengaluru takes up good practices to tackle waste. Introducing innovation in waste management, the Mitigation Action Facility-supported Circular Waste Solutions project, in collaboration with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has been actively promoting good practices among Bengaluru’s residents over the past two years by empowering them to adopt sustainable actions. This includes source segregation promotion through the introduction of Unique Identification Codes for all residential households that allow BBMP supervisors to track compliance, citizen mobilisation to adopt practices like composting and alternatives to single-use plastics, and training of ULB collection staff. Embracing data-driven solutions, the project has integrated smart technologies to optimise waste collection processes, promoted sustainable menstruation, installed lane composters, and much more. Bengaluru emerges today as a pioneer in advancing circular solutions through active community participation and mutual benefit.
