Global news and insights from independent journalists and climate entrepreneurs. #ClimateAndCapital
About us
Climate&Capital was conceived as a means to prompt meaningful action on climate issues. We’re here to inform, embolden, and connect a diverse, ever-growing cohort of entrepreneurs, executives, financiers, academics, investors, activists, NGOs, and policymakers — all of whom have a vested interest in building and influencing the climate economy. We know that’s a bold mission. But we’re living in an era of urgent transformation — one that demands individual and collective global action. To battle the climate crisis, we all must claim new responsibility — and be willing to operate on unfamiliar ground. This is about action for all, about dissolving national borders, and about giving new consideration to cooperation among institutions and corporations. Yes, we’re hopeful. We’re inspired by the change we see around us. Where others see darkness ahead, we remember the incredible leaps humankind has made in the face of adversity. Unlike other media companies, we’re climate-first. We don’t cover everything under the ESG sun; we focus on agents of change and the business of the climate economy. Indeed, that is more than everything. Because global warming touches everyone, everywhere. We believe the world of business and finance can do exactly what it should: direct capital toward climate solutions. Our job is to promote that process by informing, encouraging, and bringing together individuals and organizations engaged in developing climate solutions. The world has reached an unprecedented inflection point, and Climate&Capital endeavors to address the needs of this urgent transformation; to promote the remarkable individual and collective initiatives that have distinguished human development throughout history.

The moment you've all been waiting for... the Climate & Capital Media books to give, books to read over the holiday list. When we first started pulling together these climate-related book lists four years ago, there were far fewer new works to review. The number has grown rapidly, with a great diverse array of new fiction, nonfiction and biography offerings demonstrating how much the issue of climate change and our efforts to address it dominate our news, work and thinking. For the first time, our list includes a Booker Prize winner — Orbital, by British writer Samantha Harvey — a novel that uniquely reflects the beauty and vulnerability of our earth. Our team wishes you and yours a restful holiday and hope you’ll have some downtime to dive into some of these great reads. https://lnkd.in/gzAPn65 Ayana Elizabeth Johnson Genevieve Guenther, PhD M V Ramana Will Potter Jeremy Rifkin Clarke Owens #timwinton #juice #orbital Barclay Palmer Blair Palese Peter McKillop Kari Huus John Howell Laura Sucre Jamie Woolley Green Central Banking James North Ingrid W.

“A combination of two strategies could actually solve the #climatecrisis -- and at a #profit.” On a red-eye flight to #SaudiArabia, Hunter Lovins reflects that COP16Riyadh could make real progress though COP29 Azerbaijan failed just weeks ago. Why? Because COP16’s mission “to address the urgent global crises of land degradation, #drought and #desertification” might alert enough people that if adopted globally, #regenerativeagriculture could sequester literally *all* the #carbon generated by human activity. The #science is real. See Hunter’s latest in our on-the-ground series, Dispatch from COP. “Using holistic grazing on ALL the world’s grasslands could return the earth to ~300 ppm within 60 to 100 years…North America alone could sequester 0.8 billion tons of carbon per year just using holistic grazing…through regenerative grazing, organic crop production, reforestation, and best land use practices, the terrestrial biosphere could sequester the totality of our current #emissions.” The evidence in support of #sustainableagriculture is overwhelming, and Hunter Lovins is sharing it at COP16Riyadh, the U.N.’s Convention to Combat Desertification. “Baku was the predictable disappointment,” Lovins writes, referring to the COP29 Azerbaijan on #ClimateChange in November. “Maybe the land of deserts can bring the solutions humanity so desperately needs.” Climate & Capital Media, Barclay Palmer, Greg Retallack, Richard Teague, Fadhel Kaboub فاضل قابوب, Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity, Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, Global Institute for Food Security, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Global Green Growth Institute, Tufts University, University of Oregon, Texas A&M University, Power Shift Africa, Peter McKillop, Blair Palese, Laura Sucre, Allan Savory, Savory Institute, Seth Itzkan, Soil4Climate Inc., John Howell, Kari Huus, Jackson Trevor, Progressive Hedonist, #carbon, #climate, #sustainability, #climatemigration, #renewableenergy

“In 85% of cases we’ve diligenced—over 7,000 companies—profits and impact align,” Tom Chi of At One Ventures said last week at a talk on strategies that investors, scientists and philanthropists can use to maximize impact. The claim that making a #positiveimpact requires a sacrifice in #financialreturns is a myth pushed by the status quo. Investors can prove that smart selection of disruptive technologies brings substantial benefits to both people’s lives and the bottom line. Proving the business case and the positive impact is crucial to the drive toward a more sustainable economy. Michael Sheldrick, co-founder of Global Citizen said at the panel discussion in #SiliconValley. “It's never a good idea as a young entrepreneur to make the viability of your business model entirely dependent on whether policy settings are going to change,” Sheldrick said at the panel moderated by @Barclay Palmer of @Climate and Capital Media. “Collaboration is a key theme,” Stephanie D., CEO of Lifespan Research Institute, said of a growing drive among philanthropists, scientists and investors to foster disruptive innovations together. “You can piggyback off each other.” See Wendy Chen’s account of the strategies outlined by Chi, Sheldrick and Dainow in a talk prompted by Sheldrick’s new book, “From Ideas to Action: A Playbook for Influencing and Implementing Change in a Divided World.” Foundation Source Buckminster Fuller Institute Climate Changemakers Sustainable Ocean Alliance RujhaLIfe Olden Labs BlueCash NextMed Health SVB Stashrun Hannah Grove George Orbelian Dr. Catie Cuan Deborah Palmer Keiser (DPK) Joy Mountford Jeremy Klepper Lauryn Menard Eliza Nemser, PhD Michael Florea Steve DuBrava

“Our communities at the frontline of the adverse effects of this #climatecrisis do not have the luxury to wait for the world to take it seriously.” Cynthia Houniuhi, a leader of the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change organization, explains PISFCC’s request that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to issue an advisory opinion defining “states’ obligations under international law to protect the rights of the present and future generations from the impacts of #climatechange.” “We acknowledged the historical contributions of major carbon emitters, especially from developed nations, to the #climatecrisis, (but) we believed that a forward-looking approach is most helpful as opposed to naming and shaming.” The PISFCC helped island nations led by #Vanuatu to persuade the United Nations General Assembly to refer its case to the ICJ, and 130 states signed on to the resolution. An ICJ decision is expected in early 2025. See Houniuhi’s account of how their collaboration has succeeded in winning UN action where other organizations have struggled. “The success of the campaign so far was possible because many people – especially young people – around the world came together to help us realize our goals.”

“It was not too long ago in America that there was strong bipartisan political support for action on climate change…where even [Newt] Gingrich believed in the science of climate change. Today, the topic is a political minefield with no sign of being cleared.” Tom Mckillop makes the case that addressing the climate crisis is a national security imperative, not a “populist threat.” “Any step backward by America on the #greentransition allows its chief economic rival, China, to consolidate its position as an emerging superpower in the green industrial supply chain.” See the latest installment of Climate and Capital Media’s #EmergingVoices series here.
