💼 Weekly best practice: Greater Cape Town Water Fund 💼 As announced a few weeks ago, we’re diving into the details of the 20 best practices identified through our research during the first year of the project. This week, we spotlight a groundbreaking initiative that demonstrates how collective action and blended finance can drive impactful climate adaptation solutions. 🌍💧 🌍 The Greater Cape Town Water Fund (GCTWF) is a pioneering collective action funding and governance mechanism that empowers downstream public and private water users in Cape Town to support catchment restoration in upstream communities. Initiated by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in 2017, GCTWF aims to clear invasive species in Cape Town’s sub-catchment areas to enhance water supply and security, following severe droughts between 2015 and 2018. The GCTWF is an example of blended finance that pools financial resources from various sources and through various instruments, including public sector budgets through performance-based contracts, philanthropic contributions, and direct corporate investments from water-dependent industries. 🌱💧 GCTWF is one of over 30 water funds established by TNC across North and Latin America, and Africa, showcasing a scalable and replicable model for other contexts. In 2024, TNC published the business plan of the Norfolk Water Fund, the first Water Fund in Europe (UK). About us
The Horizon Europe project CLIMATEFIT contributes to bridging the resilience financing gap by providing critical insight and building the capacities of Public Authorities (PAs) to attract and orchestrate various public and private funding & financing sources, and of Financing and Investment Entities (FIEs) to discover and access resilient investment opportunities. CLIMATEFIT will experiment on a mix of 20 territories in Southern, Eastern and Northwestern Europe in their transformational pathways towards climate resilience. The journey will start by taking stock of funding & financing barriers and enablers gathered in the Financing Landscape taxonomy. CLIMATEFIT will create an ingenious Manual for leveraging finance to, 1) co-design 20 innovative investment strategies allowing to identify sources of funding 2) develop 10 credible and scalable investment plans to help better negotiate and articulate financing streams and define investment concepts, and 3) pilot 4 bankable, tailored investment cases. CLIMATEFIT will build a Pathway for FIEs to accelerate finance, test refined methods to reward climate-resilient investment and apply smart adaptation funding and financing solutions. It will establish Local Resilience Taskforces (LRTs) composed of PAs and FIEs that propose a catalytic and systemic approach to resilience financing. Led by WCF, the high-level consortium will build capacity, co-create solutions with PAs and FIEs, and inform EU adaptation and sustainable finance policies. Finally, CLIMATEFIT aims to boost resilience financing in Europe by consolidating the dynamics in LRTs, and to promote and scale its research findings through the European Network of LRTs and its user-oriented One- Stop Shop.

🎙 The webinar “Overcoming regulatory and structural challenges in climate adaptation finance” was held yesterday, organised by CLIMATEFIT_HEU to assist financial institutions in navigating the complexities of climate adaptation regulations. 🔵 The event began with opening remarks from Sara Tarì (Research and EU Projects Officer, ItaSIF) and Davide Chiaramonte (EU Projects Assistant, ItaSIF), who introduced the CLIMATEFIT project, shared its preliminary findings, and highlighted key opportunities for financial and investment stakeholders. 🔵 Swan Senesi (Government Partnerships for Climate, World Food Programme) provided a briefing on developments from COP29, underscoring the shortfall in climate adaptation financing. Senesi noted that the Parties at COP29 are awaiting a clear signal from the G20 summit in Brazil, with G20 leaders advocating for a substantial scaling of climate finance from billions to trillions. 🔵 Isabel Reuss (Senior Climate and Social Advisor, ItaSIF) addressed the opportunities within EU adaptation finance, focusing on the taxonomy as a critical performance indicator, alongside mechanisms such as sustainable bonds, green bonds, and basket bonds. 🔶 The webinar also featured a panel discussion titled “Scaling climate adaptation: best practices and success stories”, moderated by Varnika Srivastava (Universiteit Antwerpen). Alexandra Gropp (Head of Placement and Debt Capital Markets, Banca Finint) presented the Viveracqua Hydrobond case, while Greg Cannito (Chairman of the Board, Corvias Infrastructure Solutions) discussed the Clean Water Partnership initiative. 🔶 The panel discussion was followed by two interactive breakout sessions. The first session examined strategies to align financial activities with EU climate policies, focusing on compliance with the EU Taxonomy, SFDR, and CSRD. The second session explored the role of public-private partnerships (PPPs) in scaling adaptation finance, with discussions on risk-sharing mechanisms, profitability, and challenges inherent in PPP structures. 🤝 Meet our partners 🤝 🌍 The city of Genk, home to over 67,900 residents and spanning 88 km², has a unique urban structure shaped by its late 20th-century development around coal mine sites. This polycentric city, embedded in the landscape, faces challenges such as the reduction of green spaces due to ongoing urban developments. In response, Genk is actively implementing climate adaptation projects to reshape its urban environment. Two of the city's most notable initiatives include: - The redevelopment of the main city square, transforming it from a predominantly paved area into a green urban space. - The re-naturalisation of the Stiemer valley, which runs through the city, enhancing both ecological and urban resilience. Additionally, the ongoing Genk Verruimt research explores how to manage predicted urban growth, demographic shifts, and mobility while improving the quality and size of open spaces. The research treats these as complementary aspects of a climate-resilient urban fabric, focusing on strategies to integrate climate adaptation measures within private developments to ensure city-wide impact. 🎯 In CLIMATEFIT, Genk represents the Belgium planner case study, showcasing innovative approaches to sustainable urban development and climate adaptation. 🌱 Join us in our mission to create a sustainable and resilient future for the city of Genk and beyond! 🌍💼🌱 🌍💼🌱 #CLIMATEFIT #ClimateFinance #EUMissions #HorizonEU #MissionClimateAdaptation World Climate Foundation | Research Group for Urban Development - University of Antwerp | SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute | CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici | ICLEI Europe | Forum per la Finanza Sostenibile (ItaSIF) | Actierra | SustainAdvisory Srl | Ramboll | Euroquality - Tinexta Group | Enviros Group | Ambiente Italia S.r.l. | Agency ENERGAP | AdEPorto - Agência de Energia do Porto | Alba Local Energy Agency - ALEA | Diputación Provincial de Ávila | Agence du climat, le guichet des solutions | COMUNE DI BRESCIA | Departement Omgeving | Ville et Eurométropole de Strasbourg | Municipiul Alba Iulia | Stad Genk | Paris Europlace | Fondul Roman pentru Eficienta Energiei | CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency

🤝 Meet our partners 🤝 🌍 Strasbourg Eurometropolis is the local authority for the Strasbourg metropolitan area in France, situated close to the German border. Covering 33 municipalities and home to around 500,000 inhabitants over 340 km², Strasbourg Eurometropolis has been at the forefront of climate action. In 2020, the Eurometropolis affirmed its commitment to climate action by signing a statement on climate urgency. The city is particularly vulnerable to rising temperatures and flood risks, followed by the proliferation of invasive species and soil shrinkage-swelling. To address these issues, Strasbourg is implementing sustainable urban planning initiatives such as nature-based solutions that simultaneously reduce flood risks (e.g., through improved rainwater infiltration) and enhance overall quality of life by mitigating heat islands and promoting social and environmental justice. 🎯 In CLIMATEFIT, Strasbourg Eurometropolis, alongside the Agence du Climat, represents the French leader case study, showcasing innovative strategies in climate adaptation and sustainable urban planning. 🌐 Access our website to learn more about Strasbourg Eurometropolis and what they do in the project 🌱💼🌍 #CLIMATEFIT #ClimateFinance #EUMissions #HorizonEU #MissionClimateAdaptation World Climate Foundation | Research Group for Urban Development - University of Antwerp | SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute | CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici | ICLEI Europe | Forum per la Finanza Sostenibile (ItaSIF) | Actierra | SustainAdvisory Srl | Ramboll | Euroquality - Tinexta Group | Enviros Group | Ambiente Italia S.r.l. | Agency ENERGAP | AdEPorto - Agência de Energia do Porto | Alba Local Energy Agency - ALEA | Diputación Provincial de Ávila | Agence du climat, le guichet des solutions | COMUNE DI BRESCIA | Departement Omgeving | Ville et Eurométropole de Strasbourg | Municipiul Alba Iulia | Stad Genk | Paris Europlace | Fondul Roman pentru Eficienta Energiei | CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency
