What a weekend! Over 36 hours, we hosted over 70 participants and 20 volunteers at the FedEx Institute of Technology for the City Hackathon. #HackMemphis2024 I’m inspired and energized by the many talented individuals from diverse skills and backgrounds who came together to share their time and expertise to generate potential solutions to some of our city’s biggest civic challenges —blight, transportation, and improving government services. Special thanks to our expert speakers, workshop teachers, and coaches for providing technical support and insight to help guide the 14 teams. And to our collaborative partners on the event steering committee for making the event a well-rounded success: Innovate Memphis, City of Memphis, Memphis Technology Foundation, CodeCrew, bdpamemphis, MIDSOUTH MAKERS, Start Co., City Leadership, Epicenter Memphis, and Tech901! And our amazing photographer Connor Ryan for these photos!

I competed in my first ever hackathon… and WON!!! 🏆😊💞 (The Blight Challenge at Hack Memphis 2024) This weekend was nothing short of incredible—and it truly felt like a movie. I decided to go up to some people that I didn’t know, and by the end, I was surrounded by new friends, a design buddy , and fellow Muslims to bond with and pray alongside during study breaks. This became the best team I could have ever asked for. Alhamdulillah💗✨: (Project Manager & Glue of the Team) Hassan Ali (Data Science & Mapping) Kaliaya D., Yesenia Sanchez, Yusra Salameh (Web Design/Frontend) Katerra Payne, & Me:) Our team faced a tough challenge when a coach told us our idea wasn’t “ideal” for us to win and tried to push a different direction. But we stayed true to our vision, knowing that our idea—which focused on improving Memphis—was impactful. We took a leap, stuck with what was in our hearts, and guess what? We WON! This is a reminder to everyone, when your heart is set on something with purpose and passion, you owe it to yourself to go for it. And then we experienced an unskippable cut scene: While walking around an empty floor to find us a place to eat dinner, we met a guy who had been awake for 42 hours straight and just created his own AI—one that has memory and runs at lightning speed. He ranted to us for an hour and then we never saw him again… I finally got to meet the computer wizard in my dreams🙏🏻😔 This was a reminder for me, that for amazing opportunities to happen, I have to get out of my comfort zone. I’m so grateful for my team and this unforgettable experience of a weekend. Let’s keep pushing to make Memphis a better place! ˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ Innovate Memphis , FedEx Institute of Technology, CodeCrew #HackMemphis2024 #Memphis
