The huge opportunities and ethical challenges related to ATP-Bio's ongoing research to stop biological time is the focus of a newly released, groundbreaking symposium in The Journal on Law, Medicine & Ethics. Among the article topics: the future suspended animation of astronauts; preservation of human organs for future transplant; storing pathogens for research; preservation of biological samples for future conservation efforts; and more. Take a look at the important research, led in part by University of Minnesota Professors Susan M. Wolf, JD, and Dr. Tim Pruett, MD. https://lnkd.in/ei45_y8p NSF ERC Advanced Technologies for the Preservation of Biological Systems (ATP-Bio) Tim Pruett Andrew Maynard Rosario Isasi Susan Wolf Gary Marchant Insoo Hyun Alexander Capron Marissa Scragg Shawneequa Callier Evelyn Brister Michele Goodwin Terry Tiersch Korkut Uygun Justyna Jaskiewicz Mehmet Toner Rebecca D. About us
Since 2000, the University of Minnesota’s Consortium on Law and Values in Health, Environment & the Life Sciences has linked the multidisciplinary skill and scholarship of its member centers to conduct original research, serve students and faculty, and advance public dialogue on emerging issues at the intersection of science and society. The Consortium is one of only seven university-wide centers at the University of Minnesota, crossing nearly every college on the Twin Cities campus. Our vibrant community of scholars, policy makers, and clinicians have made the Consortium a leading national program. Our success would not be possible without the contributions of our talented staff, faculty, students, and leadership.

A nice shout-out about our Consortium chair, Susan Wolf, JD. The Symposium dives into some interesting topics related to emerging biopreservation technologies.
Professor Susan M. Wolf, Regents Professor, Faegre Drinker Professor of Law, Professor of Medicine, and Chair of the Consortium on Law and Values in Health, Environment & the Life Sciences, co-edited a symposium issue of the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics (JLME) with Professor Timothy Pruett, Professor of Surgery and Internal Medicine at the University of Minnesota, and Dr. Korkut Uygun, director of the Organ Reengineering Lab at the Center for Engineering in Medicine & Surgery, Massachusetts General Hospital. The collection of 10 articles in JLME maps the huge potential and oversight challenges of emerging biopreservation technologies to stop biological time. These technologies to revolutionize organ transplantation, pathogen research, food systems, aquaculture, environmental conservation, and deep-space travel offer enormous benefits while posing significant oversight challenges. z.umn.edu/a1sq

A groundbreaking collection of 10 articles in the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics maps the huge potential and oversight challenges of emerging biopreservation technologies to stop biological time. These technologies to revolutionize organ transplantation, pathogen research, food systems, aquaculture, environmental conservation, and deep-space travel offer enormous benefits while posing significant oversight challenges. Engineers and scientists in the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Advanced Technologies for the Preservation of Biological Systems (ATP-Bio) are pioneering these emerging technologies while ATP-Bio’s Ethics & Public Policy component offers recommendations for oversight and governance.
