Beruniy Prize for Scientific Research on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence The 220th session of the UNESCO Executive Board (9-23 October 2024) decided to establish the UNESCO-Uzbekistan Beruniy Prize for Scientific Research on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Government of Uzbekistan initiated the establishment of the Prize in order to encourage ethical development and use of AI and promote scientific endeavour and cooperation in this field. The proposed Prize (awarded every two years to three award-winners) is offering an innovative tool to award individuals, institutions and organizations that contribute to the promotion of ethical development and use of AI, by undertaking scientific research on relevant subjects, fostering scientific cooperation and advancing the practical application of ethical AI principles in real-world scenarios. The Prize consists of a monetary reward of US $30,000 for each of the three winners, representing a total monetary prize value of $90,000. A certificate and a medal will be given to each of the winners. As the donor, the Government of Uzbekistan has committed to covering all costs relating to the implementation of the Prize, inter alia, the fund for the monetary reward and the expenses related to the administration, management and communication of the Prize, as well as overhead charges. It is intended that the first award ceremony takes place during the 43rd Session of the General Conference of UNESCO, to be held in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) in November 2025.

Biomed-AI Summer School: Ethics, Innovation, AI and Health The second edition of the Biomed-AI Summer School will take place from 11 to 13 September at the National Library of Portugal in Lisbon. The event is organised by WhatNext.Law, a partnership between VdA Vieira de Almeida and NOVA School of Law, together with the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens. This initiative aims to unite the areas of Biomedicine, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data with the principles of ethics and innovation. The Biomed-AI Summer School aims to explore the revolutionary potential of AI in medicine, promoting its use in an ethical and responsible manner. This initiative emphasises the ethical, legal, and social implications associated with the use of AI in healthcare, seeking to cultivate a culture of regulatory compliance. The Summer School programme brings together academics and professionals from diverse fields, such as philosophy, law, biomedical sciences and technology. This interdisciplinary approach offers participants a comprehensive overview of the main challenges and opportunities that AI brings to the health sector, as well as the features of Responsible Research Innovation (RRI). The Biomed-AI Summer School will be feature by renowned speakers from institutions such as the European Parliament, EDAH - European Data Space in Health and universities from Europe and the United States, who will share their perspectives on the future of AI in health. The event is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), the IARC - International Agency for Research on Cancer / World Health Organization, the EPLO European Public Law Organization and BBMRI-ERIC, underlining the global importance of this initiative.
