Safety through Science
About us
The vision of the CSRA is to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities in the construction industry through transformative research and defendable science. Who is the CSRA? We are an alliance of industry leaders and experienced scientists who are focused on transformative construction safety research. The CSRA is a forum where we: • Propose and test new safety ideas and innovations • Invite industry members to actively participate in safety research • Explore the efficacy of new safety technologies • Network and share best practices • Shape the next generation of safety researchers and practitioners Why the CSRA? The rate of serious injuries and fatalities has plateaued in the construction industry for nearly 20 years. The mission of the CSRA is to assemble industry leaders and world-class researchers to conduct collaborative research that eliminates these unacceptable life-changing events. What makes us unique? We are the only industry-funded research group focused exclusively on advancing the science of safety. Our industry-academic teams work together to understand industry needs, conduct field-based research in real-world settings, collect and analyze data, and share results. Who is involved? Our membership represents multiple construction sectors, including buildings; electric power generation and delivery; oil and gas; and infrastructure. How is the CSRA funded? The CSRA is funded by the generosity of our industry partners. We ask our members to consider a tax-deductible donation of $20,000 that supports graduate students, travel, equipment, and other resources needed to conduct impactful research. This funding enables us to recruit and retain the best research team and dramatically accelerates research output. We are always looking for energetic and passionate members, so please email Ayleen Perez (ayleen.perez@colorado.edu) if you are interested in joining!

We are excited to announce the recipients of the CSRA Safety Leadership Award: Ryan Edgerton, CRSP, of Pembina Pipeline Corporation Pipeline Corporation, and Guy Hairfield, of California Resources Corporation. This award recognizes their exceptional leadership throughout the High-Energy Controls research project. This innovative project introduced many novel research approaches—most notably encouraging participants to dress up and role-play, immersing themselves in the intricate details of tasks that currently lack direct controls. Ryan and Guy led from the front, keeping the team energized and focused as they worked to establish, develop, and refine the rules for Alternative Controls. They also skillfully guided the team through rigorous noise experiments, validating the effectiveness of these new controls. Their contributions were truly outstanding, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to both Ryan and Guy for their high-energy leadership and dedication to this groundbreaking project!

At this year’s CSRA Safety Summit, we were proud to present Doug Rosenthal, MS, CSP, ARM, PHR, of ORION with a CSRA Safety Leadership Award—and yes, the "What the HECA" T-shirts he gifted to the entire team were a hit! Jokes aside, Doug has been an instrumental member of the Safety ROI research team, contributing in countless ways. From supporting data collection efforts to providing invaluable mentorship to CSRA students Arnaldo Bayona and Evan Stoddard during their site visits, Doug consistently went above and beyond to help the team achieve its ambitious goals. The ROI project demanded a tremendous amount of effort and collaboration, and Doug’s contributions—both figuratively and literally—did much of the heavy lifting. Thank you, Doug, for being an exceptional teammate, mentor, and collaborator. Your dedication has made a lasting impact on this project and the entire CSRA community!

We are proud to recognize Vince Chapa of Primoris Pipeline Services as a recipient of the CSRA Safety Leadership Award. Vince played a pivotal role in the Safety ROI research project, the most data-intensive initiative ever undertaken by CSRA, providing invaluable support that enabled the team to achieve its ambitious goals. In addition to his contributions to the Safety ROI project, Vince lent his expertise to the High-Energy Controls research project this year, actively participating in the STKY Challenge. He also went above and beyond to support Arnaldo Bayona and Yaqoob Raheemy, CSRA students conducting field data collection, ensuring they had the resources and guidance needed to succeed. Thank you, Vince, for your exceptional leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to advancing safety research and collaboration!

We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of this year’s CSRA Safety Summit. From speakers and panelists to attendees in the room and those tuning in virtually from all over the globe. Your engagement made this event a milestone in fostering collaboration and advancing safety research. We've been watching the flood of posts, photos, and insights shared by community members and have not been able to keep up and thank everyone, but please be assured that your enthusiasm and support not only inspire us but also amplify the impact of this important work. A key pillar of our mission is openness. Our work is open source, which means it thrives through collaboration and shared dissemination, beyond our membership. We encourage everyone to continue spreading knowledge, sharing ideas, and getting involved in expanding the reach and application of the insights shared at the CSRA Safety Summit.
