We drive criminal justice forward by providing objective research and convening leaders from all levels of government.
About us
We combine the power of a membership association, representing state officials in all three branches of government, with the expertise of a policy and research team focused on assisting others to attain measurable results. We bring people together. With our singular ability to reach federal, state, and local leaders from all three branches of government, we gather people from both sides of the aisle and across the country to foster collaboration. We drive the criminal justice field forward with original research. Our in-depth data analyses, coupled with extensive interviews of people on the front lines of the criminal justice system, inform improvements and spur national initiatives. We build momentum for policy change. We synthesize and contextualize data to help policymakers enact and implement major reforms that address criminal justice challenges, many of which intersect with other systems, such as health, education, and housing. We provide expert assistance. Our on-the-ground training and assistance helps state and local agencies and organizations translate the latest research into policy and practice.

New update! The Sequential Intercept Model now includes the 988 Crisis Lifeline at Intercept 0, which provides new opportunities to support people in crisis BEFORE they encounter law enforcement. So, what does this mean? Communities are building response systems where calling 988 connects people directly to local crisis services, including mobile crisis teams and longer-term support. The impact is significant and includes less strain on emergency rooms, decreased police workload, better outcomes for people in crisis, and stronger community support systems. This is the future of crisis response—connecting people with care instead of custody. Learn how your community can strengthen its crisis response system through 988. https://bit.ly/41DNY5O

San Antonio's mental health crisis response team pairs officers, paramedics, and mental health clinicians to help people during emergencies. Known as CORE (Community Outreach & Resiliency Effort), the team has grown from one unit to three teams working around the clock. "Sometimes officers showing up can be a barrier to communication," says Ernie Stevens, highlighting why this combined approach works better than traditional police response alone. The program shows how bringing together different types of helpers can better serve people experiencing mental health crises in our community. Watch the full news report: https://lnkd.in/eFTcfjsM
