  • 🚀 **Exciting News! Governor Hochul has officially signed the Alternative Delivery bill into law!** This milestone marks the hard work of DDC, industry partners, and key leaders like Mayor Adams and Senators Comrie and Sepulveda. With this law, we can now utilize innovative tools like CM-build for New York City’s libraries and cultural institutions, ensuring faster delivery of world-class facilities. **We’re already gearing up to implement CM-build, collaborating on best practices, and identifying key projects for our pilot program.** A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible — stay tuned for our first CM-build solicitations in early 2025! NYC Department of Design and Construction NYC School Construction Authority (SCA) New York Building Congress

We are thrilled to share that Governor Hochul signed the Alternative Delivery bill into law on Friday – a culmination of years of hard work by DDC, our industry partners, and leaders including Mayor Adams, Deputy Mayor Joshi, Senators Comrie and Sepulveda, and Assemblymembers Braunstein and Rajkumar.   DDC has demonstrated what we can accomplish when we get the tools we need: delivering world-class facilities years faster through our inaugural design-build program and building critical facilities in record time for New Yorkers in emergencies. Thanks to this bill, it will no longer take an emergency to use common-sense tools like CM-build for New York City’s libraries and cultural institutions.   We have already started the work to put CM-build to use: exchanging best practices with other public owners, developing fair and balanced contracts, and identifying the projects that can most benefit from this tool as part of our pilot program, managed under a special unit at DDC. Stay tuned for updates in early 2025, when we’ll be seeking input from the industry ahead of our first CM-build solicitations. DDC extends our heartfelt thanks to the colleagues, partners, and leaders at every level who helped get us here. We would like to extend our thanks to the Mayor’s Capital Process Reform Task Force and organizations including American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), AIA New York | Center for Architecture, Building Trades Employers' Association, Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), General Contractors Association, New York Building Congress, and the Subcontractors Trade Association.

    • Commissioner Foley speaks at a rally urging the state to give us the tools we need to build better and faster in New York City. Now, after the Governor's signature, we have those tools.
  • In New York City, the struggle between union and non-union employment highlights critical issues of workers' rights and protections. Unions advocate for fair wages and safe working conditions, empowering employees to negotiate better terms. Conversely, non-union workers often face job insecurity and minimal benefits, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation. This situation calls for all workers, regardless of union affiliation, to unite in advocating for fair labor practices. Ultimately, the future of work in NYC depends on collective action to ensure dignity and respect for all employees. Here two guys viewpoint on the matter. #Unions #NYC #construction

At #SkanskaResidential, we have a solid plan for the next three years, seamlessly aligning with our ambitious vision for 2045. At our recent conference, we glimpsed into a future of carbon-free living and sustainable residential development, with insights from Antonín Lupíšek of CVUT UCEEB and Marcin Milczarski (on/jego) of VIVERNO, and we discovered: 🌍 Energy Efficiency and Innovation We explored cutting-edge technologies that reduce energy consumption in buildings, like advanced insulation and smart energy management systems. The future of residential buildings will be more sustainable and energy-efficient. 🔄 Circular Economy in Construction The concept of "remolition," where every material from a demolished building is reused, is crucial for sustainable construction and waste reduction. 🏭 Transition from Coal Efforts to diversify the energy mix of heating plants in coal-dependent regions are essential for reducing carbon emissions and promoting cleaner energy sources. 🌡️ Cooling Technologies With rising temperatures, energy-efficient cooling systems are becoming more important. These systems can significantly cut energy consumption and costs. 🚗 Electromobility Advancements in electromobility hold promise for sustainable transportation and Skanska will continue to prepare its projects for it. 🏗️ Sustainable Urban Development The focus is on brownfield redevelopment and urban innovations to accommodate growing urban populations sustainably. 🏘️ Affordable Housing Creating affordable housing in large cities amidst stricter regulations and higher energy efficiency standards is challenging but we are not giving up our efforts. 📊 ESG and Reporting Digitalization and AI can streamline ESG data management, helping developers meet sustainability goals more efficiently. The journey to sustainable living is dynamic and full of opportunities. Together, we’re building homes and communities that reflect a better future. 🌱 What would you add to our list? #SustainableLiving #GreenConstruction #FutureOfHousing #InnovationForClimate #SkanskaForTomorrow

I’ve put off writing this post because I wasn’t sure how to put the experience into words. For most of my life, I’ve aspired to become a licensed professional engineer like my dad. Earlier this year, I finally got the chance to take the P.E. exam and I was excited… but also nervous. After finishing the test, the waiting game began. Talking to other P.E.s, I learned it used to take months to get yours results so I consider myself lucky to have only waited five days, but it still felt like forever. I received the email saying my results had arrived, I logged into the NCEES system and saw the news: I had passed! I immediately reached out to the state to ask when I’d officially receive my license, only to learn it would still take a few more months. So, I checked the state website almost every night until, finally, I saw my name right there—next to my dad’s. It was a surreal and incredibly proud moment. I couldn’t have done this alone and have so many people to thank including my family, the Infinite Consulting Corp. team, my mentors in and out of the industry, my supportive colleagues, and so many others who have been part of this journey. Thank you! I’m excited for what’s next. #ProfessionalEngineer #CareerMilestone #ProudMoment #EngineeringJourney #AchievementUnlocked #BuildingBetterFutures

  • New York Building Congress is a great place to meet other industry thought leaders.

Our Architect's Leadership Council was fortunate to welcome NYC Chief Public Realm Officer Ya-Ting Liu today to discuss "Reimagining Public Space." She walked the group through ongoing and upcoming projects like Broadway Vision, The Arches, and Future of Fifth, and of course, everybody's favorite initiative, Get Sheds Down! We thank her for her time and willingness to share her thoughts around how to build a better, more accessible and equitable city for all. And thanks to our hosts at Perkins Eastman.
