Sarah Stella, MD, hospitalist at Denver Health, co-authored an analysis in the American Journal of Public Health on the health impacts of criminalizing homelessness. 💡 The piece examines the implications of City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, a Supreme Court decision allowing cities to penalize unhoused individuals for sleeping in public, even when shelters lack capacity. 🌍 Dr. Stella highlights the devastating health consequences of such policies, emphasizing that encampment sweeps and forced displacement fail to improve public health or safety. 🏥 As 2025 unfolds, Denver Health remains committed to addressing emerging health care challenges and advocating for vulnerable populations like the unhoused. 🔗 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gDkj8fjv Public Health Institute at Denver Health #publichealth #healthpolicy #homelessnessawareness

It's time to bridge the knowledge gap of the strong evidence that alcohol use is linked causally with the development of several cancers. Read the complex reactions #hospitalist Eden Bernstein, MD explains in the article below.
CU Cancer Center members Gina Kruse, MD, and Marie Wood, MD, along with University of Colorado Department of Medicine physician Eden Bernstein, MD, react to the U.S. surgeon general's call to expand alcoholic beverages warning labels to include cancer risk. "The language of the alcohol warning is going to be very important. Saying ‘this causes cancer’ rather than ‘this may cause harms to your health’ will have a different impact on people,” says Kruse. Check out our new article. We interviewed hospitalized patients with severe alcohol use disorder (AUD) to understand why they were interested in injectable naltrexone over oral medications for AUD. Many felt it was a life jacket and an opportunity to improve their health. All medications for AUD should be offered in the hospital to best support people in their recovery.

To my clinician colleagues out there: if you're wondering when naltrexone is contraindicated, there is only one clear clinical scenario -> when a patient is on chronic opioid therapy for pain management. Data are lacking on the safety of naltrexone use in patients with Child-Pugh C cirrhosis or acute alcoholic hepatitis, so consider acamprosate in these patients. Check out our article for more details.

Sarah Scarpato, MD, shares insights into the role of oncology hospitalists and the Oncology Hospitalist Group, a collaboration of the University of Colorado Department of Medicine’s divisions of Hospital Medicine and Medical Oncology. "Our Oncology Hospitalist Group is one of the largest and oldest groups in the country. Many of the big academic cancer centers across the country are switching to this kind of model, but it hasn’t caught on totally yet," says Scarpato, who is also the inpatient oncology unit’s medical director and an assistant professor of hospital medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
