We design thoughtful places that allow communities to thrive and that serve as a "multiplier of good."
About us
Formed in 1982, DBA is a progressive architecture firm based in the San Francisco Bay Area and Birmingham, Ala. Our creative team is well-versed in the personal, political, and commercial dynamics of bringing new architecture into diverse urban environments. Our work combines social concern with a signature design character, resulting in distinctive, high-quality buildings that provide residents with a strong sense of community. In this way, our work acts as an advocate for improved urban planning, where looking good only counts if it does good, too.

Mark your calendars! On January 10, DBA Principal Chelsea Johnson, AIA, LEED AP, will be in Austin, Tex., speaking at the ACSA/AIA Intersections Research Conference. In the session “Centering People in Housing Design: Voices from Practice,” Chelsea will join Emily Roush-Elliott (Delta Design Build) and Lucy Begg (THOUGHTBARN) for a thoughtful discussion, moderated by architecture critic and DBA alum Kate Mazade (FTWtoday). “I’m thrilled to be joined by co-panelists who represent a range of practice locations—from urban to rural—as well as varying practice sizes and housing typologies. With this diverse range of practice-based perspectives, we’ll highlight creative methods in human-centered housing design, focused on the role of the architect as an advocate, deeply informed by location and the experience of influencing the world around you.”— Principal Chelsea Johnson, AIA, LEED AP Sign up for the conference here: https://lnkd.in/emiUbK-g #DavidBakerArchitects #ACSA #AIA #Intersections #Housing #Research #Conference #Architecture #ArchitecturalEducation Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture The American Institute of Architects (AIA)

Our design is a finalist—one of just 32 nationwide—in Chicago’s “Come Home: Missing Middle Infill Housing” competition. An initiative by the City of Chicago and the Chicago Architecture Center, the competition seeks to draw middle class residents back to Chicago. With the goal of delivering pragmatic housing solutions, our design offers a flexible, modern iteration of the traditional six-flat that focuses on what people truly need: bright, affordable, accessible, and healthy homes that link to nature, support in-home work and play, and connect neighbors and communities.
