Barton Park, Banksia (Bidjigal Country) has been transformed from an old sporting field into Bayside Council (NSW)’s largest community sporting and recreational hub. All floodlights were designed to significantly reduce upward light spill benefitting neighbouring residents, the CASA Regulations and the local wildlife. Projectors were used to illuminate the stadium, highlighting its structure and contours, while safety by design principles ensured that users feel safe within the park. Bollards along pathways and solar light poles were installed to enhance pedestrian access and sustainability. Mackie Consultants has begun design services for the next phase of Northgate at Veridian in Schaumburg, Illinois. This unique townhome subdivision, by D.R. Horton, provides a truly urban aesthetic and experience to the Chicago northwest suburbs at the former Motorola property. The overall Veridian development is a mixed-use 225-acre campus including residential and office space, entertainment, dining, hotel and retain districts. The initial urban townhome portion of Veridian included 51 townhome buildings (260 units) with open space, communal amenities, and connectivity with the surrounding campus. The development has been extremely successful with the start of an additional townhome phase including 14 buildings (66 units). Mackie Consultants provided civil engineering and land surveying services for the townhome developments including topographic surveys, land planning assistance, development platting, site grading, underground utility service, pavement geometrics, stormwater management, permitting and construction layout. Design challenges included transitional grading, public infrastructure, and subsurface aggregate volume control best management practices (VCBMP) within tight constraints. This unprecedented development brings a cosmopolitan appeal to this robust community. #Schaumburg #NorthgateAtVeridian #MackieConsultants #DRHorton #CivilEngineering #LandSurveying #CommunityImprovements

Five years ago, ARCNOVA took over a struggling cladding company on the verge of bankruptcy. The company faced serious financial issues, a tarnished brand, and broken promises that threatened its survival. However, Arcnova saw the opportunity in the challenge. Through substantial financial investment, a rebranding effort, and a commitment to integrity, the company quickly restored the brand’s reputation. “We ended up changing the company name and took over a lot of its huge jobs,” explains Jay Selcuk (The Principal of Arcnova). This bold move laid the foundation for Arcnova’s success. Arcnova is now a respected building envelope company, having successfully completed a diverse range of projects, including hospitals, student residences, long-term care centers, commercial buildings, institutional buildings, industrial facilities, and residential homes. Starting with modest beginnings, Arcnova set out to become a leader in the building envelope industry. In just five years, the company has expanded its services beyond cladding to include glazing and roofing. “Within two years, Arcnova will be a full building envelope company,” says the principal. Today, the company offers a comprehensive suite of services, including supply, installation, engineering, and maintenance of building envelopes, with a particular focus on architectural panels and metal roofing systems. #Healthcare #StudentAccommodation #CareHomes #IndustrialFacilities #Construction #ConstructionIndustry #BuildingEnvelope

As the #Nebula project nears completion, it’s clear how vital high-quality visualisations played its part in the success—from design and planning stages through to marketing. Our team at Monolith Visuals is proud to have produced the architectural visualisations that have played a role in shaping the journey of this research and development scheme at Milton Park (Oxfordshire). As Fiona J. Cooper highlights, the progress of Nebula is significant, no thanks to the expertise of a great client Milton Park, architect SRA Architects Ltd, and Barnwood Limited, as part of the project team that also includes ASA Landscape Architects and Ridge and Partners LLP. During the construction phase, visualisations act as vital representations of the project. They allow key stakeholders and prospective tenants to understand its full potential and align their vision with what’s to come. Without this initial investment in visualisation, it would be much more challenging to market and promote such innovative developments, let alone secure interest and future tenants. The value of these visuals is felt across the board—whether it’s providing clarity during planning, showcasing design intent to partners, or giving agents and professionals like Fiona the tools they need to elevate the project further, even before the final touches are complete. #Construction is due to finalise in Q1 2025 on Nebula, a €46.8m research and development scheme at 190–192 Park Drive, Milton Park. The finishing touches on external cladding and internal fit-outs now underway, the development will offer c. 7,432m2 of research and development workspace for startups and companies across #science, #technology or advanced #engineering industries. Featuring sustainably sourced glue-laminated timber (glulam) beams in lieu of steel, the timelapse shows the scale of Nebula’s structural frames. With Nebula targeting a #BREEAM Excellent rating, the installation has helped to significantly reduce the project's embodied carbon. Construction is delivered by Barnwood Limited. The 8m internal height and 5m openings for large-scale laboratory or plant equipment provide space to grow for a diverse range of companies, including those working in the UK’s space industry. The plans for Nebula were delivered under Milton Park’s Local Development Order (LDO), which, through a partnership with the Vale of White Horse District Council, simplifies the planning process to just 10 days. Tom Booker, Commercial Manager at MEPC Milton Park, said: “With Nebula nearing completion, there has been strong demand and we will shortly be announcing the first letting to a well-known international brand. We’re also in discussions with existing Milton Park occupiers looking to expand operations. Not only are they attracted to Nebula’s flexible space, #sustainable features and high-quality materials, but also the wider benefits of being based at the Park.” Working alongside Milton Park and Barnwood Limited as part of the project team are SRA Architects Ltd, ASA Landscape Architects, Ridge and Partners LLP (BREEAM, cost management, M&E, principal design, project management), Stantec (civil and structural engineering), WILLIAM DOWNIE ASSOCIATES LTD (utilities), Cundall (carbon consultant), CBRE (letting agent) and ProVision (planning).

Bricklayers collaborate closely with builders, architects, engineers, project managers, and other construction professionals to transform blueprints into structures. We like to look at our on-site work as "bringing the vision to life"... whether that's a cutting-edge new urban design to a timeless classic build. Brickit has worked on schools, hospitals, sporting grounds, community areas and even rail projects over the last little while. Throw in some restoration on older buildings into that mix as well. How you look at your craft is a game-changer... If it was simply "laying bricks", it doesn't overly inspire the team. So step back and look at how your trade contributes to the bigger picture and shift the purpose of your crew. #bricklaying #bricklayers #brickwork #tradies #construction

The World’s Largest 3D-Printed Neighborhood Is Coming to Texas They say everything’s bigger in Texas, and a development project in Georgetown is no different. Construction tech company ICON completed the world’s largest 3D-printed neighborhood in the city just north of Austin. “It brings a lot of efficiency to the trade market,” senior project manager Conner Jenkins told Reuters. “So, where there were maybe five different crews coming in to build a wall system, we now have one crew and one robot.” The community, dubbed Wolf Ranch, comprises 100 homes ranging in price from around $450,000 to $600,000; roughly a quarter have already been sold. It takes about three weeks to print the single-story residences, with a nozzle squeezing out concrete walls designed to withstand extreme weather like tornadoes and maintain cool interior temperatures during hot Texas summers. Another benefit of 3D-printed housing is sustainability — research has shown that the building method can reduce waste and carbon emissions. When the Wolf Ranch project was first announced, ICON CEO Jason Ballard called it a “watershed moment in the history of community-scale development.”

Unlike traditional concrete and steel structural elements, buildings that use mass timber or cross-laminated timber (CLT) have lower embodied carbon due to wood's renewable nature and the carbon-sequestering properties of trees. Mass timber was explored in a recent panel led by Andrew Pearl of Swinerton, with Charles Besjak, PE SE FAIA LEED of SOM, Gizem Karagoz of the NYC EDC, Tanya Luthi of Timberlab, Eli Gottlieb of Thornton Tomasetti, and Taylor Landry of Woodworks. With a keen focus on embodied carbon, they discussed strategies to navigate building code regulations, emphasizing bio-based materials like mass timber, material reuse, and the move to a circular economy in construction. Additionally, Gizem Karagoz discussed the work of the NYC EDC Mass Timber Studio: https://lnkd.in/e5vkMBBy The potential ease in processing permits for these structures under the new IBC left me optimistic about the future of mass timber construction. For example, the New York City 2022 Building Code was updated to include mass timber within the definition of Type IV construction. CLT, a prominent form of mass timber, is now permitted for use in exterior walls, floors, and roofs. The inclusion of CLT offers significant advantages such as reducing the weight and carbon impact of buildings compared to traditional concrete structures, as well as faster construction timelines since prefabricated CLT building elements, arriving in large panels, facilitate swift and efficient installation during construction. We extend our gratitude to Swinerton and Timberlab for organizing this event and providing a platform for collaboration and learning. Here's to a future where innovation and sustainability go hand in hand!
