Love the new Ads from Envato
Have you ever caught yourself picking apart a menu’s font instead of the food on offer, or zoning out of a conversation because that billboard’s kerning is driving you mad? If you consider yourself ‘creatively obsessed’, you’re not alone! Our new campaign celebrates creatives who sweat the design details. ✍️ 🎨 From video editors fine-tuning sound effects to designers agonizing over font choices, every creative knows the feeling of being consumed by their work. I recently attended the DMLA Conference in NYC, NAB NYC, IBC Amsterdam, and Adobe Max, and met with over 100 peers in our industry. These experiences were full of insights on how technology, particularly AI, is reshaping the creative and licensing industries and the challenges it poses for stock media. Evolution of Stock Media 🔗 Pre-Digital Era: Stock photography was expensive and limited, with generic collections that were difficult to access. ⚙️ Digital Revolution: Platforms like Getty Images made stock media more accessible and diverse, setting new standards. 📸 Microstock Era: The early 2000s saw the rise of affordable platforms, democratizing content and increasing competition. 👨🎨 User-Generated Content: Advances in tech allowed amateur contributions, enriching content diversity. 💼 Subscription Model/Unlimited Access: The 2010s introduced subscriptions that provided bulk access, changing consumer behavior and stabilizing revenue streams. 🤖 Generative AI and Automation: AI now automates tagging, image searches, and generates media, challenging companies to adapt. Success depends on leveraging these tools for efficiency while focusing on unique, defensible content. Key Takeaways from My Recent Travels: ⚖️ Balancing Authenticity and Trust: Maintaining credibility amidst manipulated media is crucial. Provenance tools like C2PA help track content origins. Distributors that foster partnerships with key creators will stay ahead. 🚀 AI as a Complement to Creativity: AI enhances content creation but human creativity remains vital. Companies that effectively combine both will thrive. Differentiating human-created from AI-generated content is key to preserving value. 📚 Evolving Marketing Strategies: Platform-specific content and brand trust are essential. AI boosts efficiency but should not compromise authenticity. 🔒 Navigating Legal and Ethical Standards: New regulations in the EU and U.S. on content moderation and data practices benefit the stock media industry by ensuring proper data licensing and privacy compliance. ⚡️ Mediocrity Will Not Survive: Barriers to entry have dropped, but AI accelerates the market’s shakeout. This has already led to the exit of many large producers and will continue. 💼 Business Model Adaptation: Reinventing business models to capture new revenue streams is vital. Companies slow to adapt risk rapid obsolescence. The conferences highlighted that while technology creates opportunities, trust, authenticity, and ethics remain the backbone of industry sustainability. Despite the rise of AI, demand for authentic, premium content will persist. Adaptability is crucial to stay relevant as the industry evolves. Attached some recent content produced by the Motion Graphics team at Wavebreak Media which hopefully resonates with some of the above! Just got word from Chris Israel that "the [United States] Copyright Office, per a letter to the House Administration Committee last week, committed to complete the remaining sections of their eagerly awaited report on AI & Copyright by the end of 2024." This will include input on: - Copyrightability of GenAI output - Legal implications of training AI models on copyrighted works, including issues such as liability, licensing, and fair use. All I will say is, it's about time. Dataset Providers Alliance Digital Media Licensing Association - DMLA CEPIC J. Gusztav Nadler
