About us
E-CONTRAIL project aims to develop artificial neural networks (leveraging remote sensing detection methods) for the prediction of the climate impact derived from contrails and aviation-induced cloudiness, contributing, thus, to a better understanding of the non-CO2 impact of aviation on global warming and reducing their associated uncertainties as essential steps towards green aviation. As part of the #UC3M Science & Innovation Week, the E-CONTRAIL team organized the interactive workshop “Aircraft contrails: climate impact quantified with satellites and AI.” ☁️ 🛰️ It was one of 50+ outreach activities offered by Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Fundación para el Conocimiento madri+d, bringing research and innovation closer to the public. Through two hands-on experiments , we explored: ✅ How #contrails are formed and their climatic impact ✅ The #ECONTRAIL methods for detecting and analyzing contrails using satellite imagery and #AI algorithms. This workshop provided a fantastic platform to share our work with a wide audience and raise awareness about the environmental challenges posed by #aviation. A huge thanks to all participants, the Aircraft Operations Lab UC3M and the dep. of Aerospace Engineering UC3M for making this event a success! 🙌 🔗 Learn more about the E-CONTRAIL project and the workshop here: https://lnkd.in/deRd-iqf

Today Irene Ortiz Abuja unveiled the latest #ECONTRAIL project research at the #SIDS2024 🇮🇹 She presented how our #AI detection model analysed two weeks of contrail radiative impact, with some insightful preliminary results: 🔺The detected #contrails show an overall warming effect throughout the day. 🔺Potential increase in contrail cover and warming from the analysed week in 2023 to the same week in 2024. 🔺The increase in contrail radiative forcing only represents a 1% of the total. Our team is also showcasing a poster! ✈️ If you haven’t stopped by yet, we wait for you tomorrow to discuss how Europe can pave its way for sustainable #aviation.

📢 Reminder: Only 10 days left to make an impact! 🆙 Support climate science by helping us gather real-world data on aviation-generated #contrails. All you need is your phone and a moment to #LookUp! Here’s how you can get involved: 1️⃣ Download Breakthrough Energy 's Contrail Observer app. 2️⃣ Snap photos of contrails in your area and submit them through the app. Your photos will provide crucial data to help researchers validate and refine algorithms for predicting where contrails are likely to form. The ultimate goal? To improve flight planning and reduce the climate impact of #aviation. 📷✈️ And don't forget—the best photo wins our Best Contrail Capture Award! Submit by November 24th! Our #ECONTRAIL paper for the #SIDs is officially published! 🚀 📄 "Satellite-Based Quantification of #Contrail Radiative Forcing over #Europe: A Two-Week Analysis of #Aviation-Induced #Climate Effects" 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d_WXy5MJ Irene Ortiz Abuja and the team will be in Rome this week presenting our findings. Be sure to save the date and time for the presentation! 📆 We look forward to connecting and discussing our research with anyone interested.
The revised version of my paper for the SIDs Conference in Rome 🇮🇹 is now available! 🚨 😏 This paper presents findings from the E-CONTRAIL project, detailing a two-week analysis of contrail radiative impact ✈🌫 across the full field of view of Meteosat Second Generation satellites 🛰, using our AI-based detection model. The radiative impact of each contrail was calculated by our collaborators at the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium (KMI-IRM-RMI) using advanced Radiative Transfer Models ⛈ 🌡 . My colleague Ermioni Dimitropoulou will provide an in-depth explanation of these radiative forcing calculations at the upcoming AGU Annual Meeting in Washington 🇺🇸 this December! 📖 The paper can be found online in open access at https://lnkd.in/dgwYf6DZ 🕖 I'll be presenting on November 14th at 12:30. You can find more details of the full agenda here: https://lnkd.in/dAbKMRSE. A special thanks to the SESAR Joint Undertaking for hosting me at this event. I’m looking forward to addressing any questions you may have! 😊

Truly intriguing! Aircraft contrails – we've all seen them in the blue sky. Have you ever wondered how they contribute to global warming once they form? Would you guess that it depends on whether it’s daytime or nighttime? Irene Ortiz Abuja from the University Carlos III of Madrid and her colleagues have developed an AI-based method and analyzed satellite data collected by EUMETSAT. Here are the key findings: 1. During the day, contrails reflect sunlight, having a cooling effect on Earth's temperature. 2. At night, however, contrails trap outgoing infrared radiation that would otherwise escape into space. Keep in mind that day and night vary depending on latitude and change throughout the year. Now, they aim to extend their studies for more insights. Could this help optimize aircraft schedules to account for seasonal variations in day and night, maximizing the cooling effect? #sustainability #ai #globalwarming https://lnkd.in/djMaYqV9
