🌍 What’s wrong with our current economic system? Jane Mariara, Executive Director of our Kenyan partner PEP - Partnership for Economic Policy, highlights a critical challenge: policy silos that fail to address the interconnectedness of social, economic, and ecological issues. She calls for a reboot of the system with a holistic vision of ecological sustainability, social wellbeing, and a focus on the needs of the most vulnerable. 🎥 Watch our interview to learn more.

🌟 A new study published in the Journal of Evolutionary Economics authored by Christophe Feder, Beniamino Callegari and David Collste dives into the system selection process for sustainable development. Sounds cryptic. But is relevant. A summary: 🧐𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐦 📉 Current economic growth models often lead to unsustainable practices. 🌪️ These practices spark negative reactions from natural and social systems, creating vicious cycles. It is critical to understand that this problem is a macro problem. as the authors say, these processes operate: (i) above the microeconomic and institutional selection processes and through (ii) co-evolution among economic and social/natural domains, and (iii) a long-term cumulative mechanism. 🔬 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 💡 The study integrates system dynamics modeling with evolutionary economics to map these complex interactions. 📊 Using the Earth4All model, it simulates global development processes from 1980 to 2100. In the figure 👇 some of the macro selection processes. 🎯 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 ✔️ Without significant change, the world risks: 🌎 Escalating environmental degradation. 🌍 Growing inequality and social unrest. 🌪️ Feedback loops that worsen both issues. ✔️ To achieve sustainable development, we must: 🌱 Embrace a holistic view of economic, social, and environmental systems. 🤝 Foster co-evolution of these systems for long-term resilience. 📈 Adopt innovative strategies that prioritize planetary and societal well-being over short-term gains. https://lnkd.in/eEUkmwY2

#EcocideLaw: Yesterday, our Executive Chair Sandrine Dixson-Declève spoke at the the official side event to the 23rd Assembly of State Parties to the International Criminal Court on introducing a fifth crime of ecocide to the Rome Statues. She drew attention to the widespread public support for the measure: in September our survey with Global Commons Alliance revealed that 72% of people surveyed in the G20 support making ecocide a crime. The event was organised by Stop Ecocide International Climate Counsel The UCLA Law Promise Institute Europe and hosted by Nazhat Shameem Khan, Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court .

How can we achieve an Earth for All? Watch the latest clip of Hive Initiative's conversation with our science chair Per Espen Stoknes who breaks down the elements needed - from technology and markets to building real democratic participation through citizens' assemblies. His vision? A citizens' assembly on how to share the wealth of the commons for all through a citizen's fund. He points to the work of Iswe Foundation rolling out assemblies across the world as example of how we can transform our system for the many, not the few. Watch now ⬇️
🌟 Week 9: How can we make the turnarounds happen? In this ninth clip from our video about Earth4All with scientist Per Espen Stoknes, we get into the concrete actions that will help make Earth4All’s turnarounds a reality. These include the adoption of new governance structures that allow for more voices to be heard and also reduce wealth inequality. These include the use of citizen’s assemblies in lawmaking and a citizen’s fund to better distribute the profits from a company’s use of society’s resources. 👀 Watch the whole interview: https://lnkd.in/dsNSbjnv Next Wednesday we will post the final video in this series, where we will learn what an individual can do to make the turnarounds happen. 🌟 Support solutions which will heal our planet and society: sign up at https://earth4all.life And consider sharing this post–or the entire video–the more we all understand, the easier it is for all of us to make our better world happen. - - - 🌍️ Hi! 📈 Rethinking Finance for Wellbeing and Planetary Boundaries 🌍 The Club of Rome’s Rethinking Finance Impact Hub is spearheading an essential transformation in the financial sector, reimagining it as a catalyst for wellbeing within the Earth’s natural limits. This initiative focuses on leveraging short-term policies to foster long-term systemic change, setting the stage for a future where finance truly serves people and planet. Over the past year in partnership with the European Investment Bank (EIB), the hub formed an agreement for a new event series, “From Financing Innovation to Innovating Finance.” Through public and private collaboration, this series addresses the transformative potential of both sectors to reshape finance toward a fair and regenerative economy. Alongside the Earth4All initiative, The Club of Rome has is working with the Beyond Bretton Woods initiative on a new report - Investing for an Equitable Global Balance Sheet. 🌎 What do we know about people’s attitudes to planetary stewardship? The Global Commons Survey, conducted for Earth4All and Global Commons Alliance by Ipsos UK this year, revealed five "planetary stewardship segments" according to the beliefs, motivations and concerns of citizens across the globe. We found that a full 61% of people surveyed are planetary stewards, progressives, and optimists who understand the risks of climate change and want action to protect our planet, while just a small minority oppose this. But there is a large segment who remain unengaged. Dive into what we learned from the planetary steward segmentation and why it matters in Owen Gaffney's blog ⏩ https://lnkd.in/dsG2xSuh

In an age where consumerism and trends such as #BlackFriday prevail, we invite you to rethink consumption and focus on how we can operate within Earth's natural limits to create a more sustainable and equitable future. In this insightful TED Conferences Talk, Gaya Herrington, member of The Club of Rome, shares actionable strategies for rethinking our economic and social systems. She proposes a shift in thinking from "never enough" to "enough for each," asking us to contemplate whether the end of exponential growth on a finite planet will come by our own design — or disaster. Her talk highlights the critical role of systems thinking in navigating the complex challenges of our time. Her vision is essential for creating a world where both people and the planet can thrive.
