  • At the University of Maine's Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC), groundbreaking research is advancing the use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in sectors like construction, aerospace, and marine. These high-strength, durable materials are ideal for sustainable infrastructure. The ASCC is pioneering in large-scale, AI-enabled, bio-based manufacturing with projects like BioHome3D—a 3D-printed house made from wood fibers and bio-resins—and the VolturnUS floating wind platform. The center is also focused on circular economy principles, exploring FRP composites' environmental impacts through life cycle assessment (LCA) research led by Prof. T. Reed Miller. Key studies include comparing the carbon footprints of virgin vs. recycled feedstocks and developing eco-friendly thermoplastic composite rebar. Miller's team has also won Department of Energy awards for recycling wind turbine blades into FRP composites.
