Responsive, attentive relationships with a caring adult help build a strong foundation for a child’s brain architecture and all future health and well-being. When an infant or young child babbles, gestures, or cries, and an adult responds with eye contact, words, or a hug, this back-and-forth interaction—known as serve and return—helps to build and strengthen neural connections in the child’s brain. These connections are essential for the development of communication and social skills. December 3 marks the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities, an annual observance with a vital theme this year: "Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future." This theme underscores the essential contributions of individuals with disabilities in creating a world where everyone can thrive. For children with disabilities, however, accessing developmental support remains a significant challenge. Many face barriers such as limited policy protections, inadequate screening and specialized services, insufficient training for providers, restrictive social perceptions, financial constraints on families, and a lack of accessible environments.
