"ECHO - Engaging Citizens in soil science: the road to Healthier Soils" is a Research and Innovation Action funded by the European Union, under the Program Horizon Europe, topic HORIZON-MISS-2022-SOIL-01-09. The project started on June, 1st 2023 and will last 4 years. The project is based on three main principles: engaging citizens, empowering them with knowledge and an active role in data collection, and enabling them to participate in decision-making on soil issues. The ECHO consortium consists of 16 participants: 10 leading universities and research centres (Free University of Bolzano-Bozen, University of Hohenheim FCIENCIAS.ID and University of Lisboa, University of Bologna, The James Hutton Institute, University of Eastern Finland American Farm School, University Stefan Cel Mare Suceava, University of Extremadura), 4 SMEs (Solutopus, Plantpress, Quanta Labs, Ambienta), and 2 Foundations (Ibercivis, Resoil). The participants from small companies and foundations, as business and civil society representatives, are complementary to the soil and social sciences experts of academic partners and crucial for achieving the ambitious goals of ECHO. ECHO will generate new data on the health status of EU soils, complementing existing soil mapping and monitoring in EU Member States, including the EU Soil Observatory (EUSO). The project will develop and deploy 28 tailor-made citizen science initiatives across EU Member States, taking into account different land-uses, soil types, and biogeographical regions, as well as stakeholder needs. We believe that the ECHO project will have a significant impact on soil health and citizen engagement across the EU and become an important step towards protecting and preserving our soil for future generations. By working together, we can ensure that our soil remains healthy and productive, and that we continue to enjoy the many benefits it provides.

Meet our newest Ambassador - Alessandro Lo Genco from Italy 🇮🇹 ! As a manager of vineyards, Alessandro is no stranger to the topic of #soilhealth 🪴 In fact, the relationship between soil and wine taste is a fundamental concept in winemaking, shaping the character and quality of the wine produced in a given region. Different soil types, such as clay, sand, limestone, and volcanic ash, contribute distinctive minerals and physical properties that can enhance the flavor profiles of wines. Another great reason to protect our soils! We hope our collaboration will be fruitful 🍇 🍷 Become an ECHO Ambassador! https://lnkd.in/djGtQ7bK #echoambassador #echosoil #missionsoil #EUmission #horizonEU #projectecho
Got a minute to talk about soil? 🪴 Our mission is to ensure that the data generated by project ECHO is useful and easily accessible. We are therefore collecting information on how you typically use soil health-related data. By filling out this short survey, you’ll help us cater our tools to your needs! Find the survey here: https://lnkd.in/d_8xFYgt Thank you! 💚 🌿 #projectecho #echosoil #soilhealth #soilfertility #missionsoil #horizonEU #EUmission
Greetings from project ECHO at the Grassi Museum für Angewandte Kunst! We are thrilled to invite you to immerse yourself in the fascinating world of "Zukünfte: Material und Design von morgen" - “Futures: materials and design of tomorrow”. Join us as we explore innovative designs and visions for the future, showcasing the intersection of art, design, and sustainability 🌿🎨 Dive into the exhibition at Grassi Museum in Leipzig, where we envision the relationships, biofabrics, and sustainable materials shaping our upcoming future - as well as showcase the ECHO soil kit 🔬 🪴 photos: Aart van Bezooijen #echosoil #soilhealth #modernart #sustainability #missionsoil #EUmission #horizonEU #projectECHO

Hello from European Mission Soil Week again! 🍂 Today in Brussels an exclusive side event is held for Mission Soil-funded projects. We are happy to be a part of this Cluster meeting. It is a great opportunity for an in-person meeting and mark a milestone for the development of the clusters’ activities, taking stock of the results achieved so far and advancing on coordination of future activities. Thank you Céline Laurent and Wiktoria Witek for representing #ECHOsoilproject and for sharing our experiences in using art to communicate on soil health with other participants. #missionsoilweek #missionsoil
Bravo for our #ECHOsoilproject team! 👏
💥 Another intense week for ECHO in Bruxelles to understand the ongoing initiatives for monitoring and improving soil health in Europe. A great opportunity to understand the latest achievements of the Mission Soil 🌱 Lucky to be part of this community ✨ #MissionSoil #MissionSoilWeek #MissionSoil2024 #EUMissions #ECHOsoil #HorizonEurope ECHO Horizon Europe Project
🌱 Greetings from the ECHO Annual Meeting! 🌱 It was a very busy morning! Our Leaders met in the field to test the ECHO soil kit, which will soon be distributed around Europe through ECHO Ambassadors. Of course, taking full advantage of the kit would be impossible without the ECHO app, which was also put to the test and discussed in detail. It’s our goal to smooth out any wrinkles in the user experience and provide clear instructions, so that the ECHO soil kit can be used to its full potential. A huge thank you to all of our team members who keep refining these analog and digital tools! 🌳 #echosoil #missionsoil #projectecho #horizonEU #EUmission #ECHOambassador

The newest addition to the ranks of ECHO Ambassadors knows the value of community and partnership 🤝 🌳 Wendy Murray focuses her energy on the coastal environment, where soil meets the sea, and has been a champion for positive change for many years. Welcome, Wendy! 🌱 "My name is Wendy Murray, and I am the lead trustee for my village charity, East Haven Together. I have lived in the coastal village of East Haven in Angus for 34 years. Living so close to the sea has always felt a privilege, but one which brings responsibilities. I first got involved with NatureScot in 1992 when I wanted to understand more about the low-lying dune system and the Site of Special Scientific Interest. At that time, East Haven was the only place in Scotland where a plant called the Greater Yellow Rattle grew naturally. Over the last ten years, the plant has declined and local horticulturalists believe this to be as a result of changes in the soil structure. A key priority for East Haven Together is to protect and conserve the natural coastal environment. To achieve our priorities, we developed a sustainability strategy in 2015 which links to national strategies and global sustainable goals. We work in partnership with a range of environmental and wildlife organisations, which has enabled us to manage the various areas of land in East Haven in the best way possible. Everything we do is community-led and on a volunteer basis. We work in collaboration with other coastal communities right along the Angus coast. Collecting data and participating in citizen science projects is also something we have been involved in for many years. I am therefore very keen to become an ECHO Ambassador for the Echo project. All my work over the years in East Haven has helped me to understand just how critical soil health is to both growing, biodiversity and maintaining wildlife habitats. In October 2024, the work carried out across the East Haven area was recognised on a UK level when we were awarded the RHS Gardening for Wildlife Award. Understanding more about the health of our soils will help to inform and develop our future activities." You can become an ECHO Ambassador too! https://lnkd.in/djGtQ7bK #echosoil #projectecho #soilhealth #echoambassador #EUmission #missionsoil #horizonEU
