Back in 1970, women were a rarity on law school campuses and made up just 9% of all students, but not anymore. Women first outnumbered men at American Bar Association-accredited law schools in 2016, and by 2023 they were 56% of the national law student body. Last year, 65,000 women were pursuing juris doctor degrees, compared with 50,000 men. This year’s edition of the annual ABA Profile of the Legal Profession, released on Nov. 18, highlights women lawyers and their steady rise in law schools, law firms and within the federal government.
