As more and more brands choose paper (for EPR, curbside recyclability, and to avoid the risk of ocean plastic), it has never been more important to do paper packaging right. 📦 So I am thrilled to share that all of EcoEnclose website boxes are now FSC® Recycled - to help our brands back their recycled content claims with trusted third party verification.🌳 And yes, we actually hold our certification - which anyone can verify through FSC's Public Certificate Search (its disheartening to see how many packaging providers claim certification inaccurately). I share this often but it's worth repeating, especially as the tide change from plastic to paper continues ➡️ when designing paper packaging solutions at EcoEnclose, we focus on the following and encourage our brands to do the same (in order of priority). ✅ Choose recycled, with a focus on #PCW ✅ Lean on trusted FSC® certification of recycled content when verification is needed. ✅When virgin paper is absolutely critical, source virgin paper responsibly, working to minimize deforestation risks using tools such as FSC® certification. ✅Explore next gen fibers, with the goal of diversifying the fiber basket to reduce strain on forests. Colorado is considering a bill to repeal its $0.10 state paper bag fee. The paper bag fee was instituted as part of the state's Plastic Pollution Reduction Act which banned plastic retail bags. As I've written about many times - it is so important that plastic bag bans are always paired with restrictions, fees or bans on single-use paper bags. The world can't simply replace our single-use plastic with single-use paper and call it a job well done - as paper packaging solutions have their own environmental burdens (water consumption, carbon footprint, increased pressure on forests, etc). Colorado's ban was crafted thoughtfully to keep this tension in mind and its disheartening to see attempts to roll it back. Proud to see Eco-Cycle (who helped draft the original bill) helping testify against the repeal of the paper bag fee. Thank you Eco-Cycle for your incredible advancing zero waste in our communities. This is our #1 strategy and focus - the majority of EcoEnclose solutions are 100% recycled. ✅ When virgin paper is necessary, prioritize full Chain of Custody FSC Certification (whereby the forest and every stage in the supply chain is certified and the end package can be on-package labeled as being FSC certified). ✅ When full Chain of Custody isn't feasible, request FSC Certified paper from the mill and avoid sourcing from within 50 miles of Ancient & Endangered forests using incredible Canopy's ForestMapper tool. In these situations, we can't make an FSC claim because the chain of custody is broken in the supply chain, but we have increased confidence that the paper's forest of origin does not pose risk to deforestation. ✅ Audit all FSC claims and avoid working with any supply chain partners that make fraudulent situations - whereby an entity claims FSC but a search for their license # shows that they don't actually hold the certification themselves. Here's a quick summary...or check out the article for a comprehensive review. ✅ Key Trend 1: More Brands Will Make Sustainability Decisions Based On Profitability and Business Growth There's been an unfortunate shift among businesses adjusting their posture and tone regarding sustainability commitments, driven by - administrative changes and a volatile political landscape, financial struggles that have affected businesses in recent years, and failure by many brands to make actual progress toward bold eco-commitments that were made in the past. ✅ Key Trend 2: Packaging Legislation Will Begin to Play a Bigger Role In Decisions. Thankfully (in contrast with the above key trend!), state-level EPR and other eco packaging legislation is here and will become a meaningful driver of brand packaging decisions this year. Compliance-related improvements we expect brands pursue include: ✔️ Curbside recyclable materials ✔️ Compostable food packaging ✔️ Expanded packaging data collection and reporting  ✔️ EcoModulation to reduce EPR fees ✔️ Prioritization of clear labeling and third-party verification ✔️ Removing packaging that gets to the end customer ✅ Key Trend 3: Plastic-Free Packaging Will Evolve and Become More Nuanced. We're likely to see the following. ✔️ PE and PET will become the preferred polymers, while other plastics - such as PVC, LDPE, and even PP - will be scrutinized. ✔️ Paper will keep gaining traction, but we expect many brands (particularly international brands) to reevaluate the way they source to minimize risk of deforestation. ✔️ Well vetted novel materials will provide additional plastic-free alternatives this year. We're especially excited for: - Seaweed, including our Sway Poly Bags  - Food and ag waste-derived packaging - Edible food wrappers - Regeneratively grown sugarcane ✔️ Plastic-free and recycling-compatible coatings for paper ✔️Reusable or refillable packaging will expand in certain industries. ✅ Key Trend 4: "Net Zero" May Stall, But Carbon Reduction Efforts Must Continue ✔️ Investments In Carbon-Neutral and Carbon-Negative Packaging. ✔️ Lightweighting Packaging. ✔️ Prioritizing Flexible Packaging (over rigids) ✅ Other Trends We're Seeing: ✔️ Tariffs Will Lead to Expanded Local Sourcing (And More Brands Frontloading Inventory) ✔️ Chemical Recycling Is In Flux and May Decline ✔️ Minimalist, eCommerce-Ready Packaging Will Become More Prevalent ✔️ The Market for Interactive, Experiential, or Smart Packaging Will Grow #2025 #sustainablepackaging #packagingtrends
