The Global Development Assistance (GDA) programme was brought to life by European Space Agency (ESA) Member States at the Space19+ Ministerial Council in November 2019 and is implemented in partnership with key International Financial Institutions (IFIs) – World Bank and Asian Development Bank – under the joint Space for International Development Assistance (Space for IDA) cooperation framework. Our Mission is to accelerate impact by fully capitalising on the power of satellite Earth Observation (EO) in international development assistance operations.

🌾 Spotlight today: The Murat River Watershed Rehabilitation Project in Türkiye together with IFAD Through the European Space Agency - ESA GDA programme, IFAD is bringing EO to the forefront of climate-resilient agriculture. Here’s what was achieved: ✅ Mapped 4,650+ hectares of terraces using satellite imagery ✅ Reduced soil erosion on steep slopes ✅ Boosted vegetation cover and soil moisture 📢 We’re proud to see the collaboration between the ESA and IFAD gaining recognition in International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD)’s Climate Action Report, which was launched at COP29. 🌍 Beyond Türkiye, ESA and IFAD are scaling this collaboration to make EO an integral tool for agricultural planning and environmental monitoring globally. Together, we’re supporting smallholder farmers by enabling better resource management and strengthening adaptation to climate challenges. 🌊 How are the European Space Agency - ESA’s GDA together with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Development Bank supporting efforts to tackle climate risks like flooding and erosion in Georgia? 🔍 Through #EarthObservation tools like CoastSat, over 40 years of satellite data have been analysed to track shoreline changes and pinpoint areas vulnerable to flooding and erosion of Georgia’s Black Sea coast. 💡 This detailed assessment is driving space-born solutions, directly informing the Georgian Ministry for Regional Development and Infrastructure and shaping their resilient infrastructure designs and coastal management plans. This is Earth Observation in action - turning data into impactful, real-world resilience! 📈 What’s next? ✅ The ESA Global Development Assistance (GDA) AID Water Resources activity has been completed successfully. This project provided advanced Earth Observation (EO) services for sustainable water resource management in beneficiary countries, thus supporting the work of International Financial Institutions (IFIs). #Water is a precious resource, essential for daily life, agriculture, or healthy ecosystems. Satellite-based information can substantially contribute to managing water resources in a sustainable way. Over the past 21 months, our dream team - led by EOMAP with colleagues from Brockmann Consult GmbH, GeoVille Information Systems and Data Processing GmbH, Gisat, GMV, Gruner Stucky Ltd, and Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) - has delivered EO solutions to The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank for the client countries listed below. Together with IFI and client country representatives, we have addressed water availability, quality, and other water-related challenges to strengthen these areas’ water management and resilience to the impacts of climate change. 🌏 Balochistan, Pakistan: rangeland drought assessment, sediment transport and hydrological modelling 🌍 Botswana: groundwater resources assessment 🌍 Cameroon: sediment analysis for a reservoirs’ lifetime assessment 🌍 Georgia: flood detection and mapping, sediment analysis, water quality assessments 🌍 Lake Victoria: water quality monitoring 🌎 Mexico: agricultural drought assessment, irrigation planning support 🌎 Peru: turbidity data, discharge information and modeling for evaluation of reservoirs lifespan 🌏 Timor-Leste: surface water extent detection and variation monitoring 🌏 Uzbekistan: water quality, reservoir storage monitoring, sediment tracking 🌍 Zambezi River Basin: water quality and discharge information Thanks for the dedication, expertise, and collaborative spirit to everyone involved! We’ve been able to provide IFIs with critical insights that will drive sustainable water management globally.
