Did you know…🤔 That by working at minimum wage for $7.25/hr, each week you have to work 106 HOURS to afford a modest 1 bedroom rental home at Fair Market Rent.💰 This is why workforce development and the ability to make a life-sustaining wage is so important to all aspects of life, including safe, affordable housing.🏠 Source: National Low Income Housing Coalition

The pandemic drove more than 70 million additional people into extreme poverty. This is why our team at Fernandez Realty Group made it our life’s mission to do our part to offer more people a safe, affordable place to call home. Home is where opportunities are nurtured, and from this it is where change grows. 🏡

Addressing the issue of safe, affordable housing spans far beyond the brick-and-mortar structures. We must also consider how the location supports access to adequate education. 📚 Black and Hispanic/Latino students remain concentrated in segregated, high- poverty neighborhoods with low-performing schools. 📉 According to Habitat for Humanity, about 45% of Black and Hispanic/Latino students attend high-poverty schools.📊 Fernandez Realty Group is working to address the whole picture of poverty when we invest in a low-income housing project.🏡 We work to create entire systems that support each social determinant of health.

If you don’t think there is an affordable housing crisis, consider this. A full-time worker in Pennsylvania earning minimum wage needs to work nearly 3.3 full-time jobs or approximately 130 hours per week to afford a two-bedroom apartment. That’s simply not possible or reasonable! We need to do better, and by working together we can. The first step is awareness. Let’s shine a light on the affordable housing gap in Pennsylvania! #pennsylvaniahousing #AffordableHousing

As we close out June, we recognize Juneteenth, the commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. And while this is a huge milestone, our work is far from complete. As we celebrate this special holiday of unity and liberation, join with Fernandez Realty Group in urging our elected officials to pass policies to advance racial equity in housing. #juneteenth #reflection
