🌍 Energy Tunnels: Pioneering Sustainable Heating and Cooling in Urban Areas ⚡ What if tunnels could do more than transport people or utilities? Enter Energy Tunnels, a groundbreaking solution that transforms underground infrastructure into renewable energy systems, making cities more sustainable. 🔍 What Are Energy Tunnels? Energy tunnels are a type of thermoactive geostructure where heat-exchanger pipes are embedded into the concrete walls or linings of tunnels. These systems harness the natural, steady temperatures of the ground to provide efficient heating and cooling. Why Energy Tunnels Are a Game Changer: ⚡ Dual Purpose Efficiency: No extra drilling is needed for geothermal activation; the pipes are integrated into the tunnel’s structure, reducing costs and environmental impact. 🏗️ Urban Optimization: Most tunnels are located beneath densely populated areas, enabling city-wide geothermal energy distribution. 🌡️ Scalability: The large surface area of tunnels provides significant heat exchange potential, ideal for district heating and cooling networks. 💡 Looking Ahead: As cities grow and energy demands increase, energy tunnels offer a sustainable, scalable solution. By combining structural functionality with renewable energy generation, this technology supports both urban development and climate goals. 🎤 What do you think? Could energy tunnels reshape how we think about renewable energy in cities? What challenges or opportunities do you foresee in implementing this technology at scale? #EnergyTunnels #GeothermalEnergy #Sustainability #SmartCities #UrbanDevelopment #FOLIAGE Thank you @Alessandra Insana, @Marco Barla and @Alice Di Donna for sharing with us the graphic representation of energy tunnels İf you want to read more about energy tunnels, check out our colleagues' publications: https://lnkd.in/e6VaxQMx, https://lnkd.in/eJUGkQHZ

About us
Foliage in a Nutshell: Energy GeoStructures are a special type of ground heat exchanger, installed within ground contact structures such as retaining walls, piles, tunnels, and other buried infrastructure. Energy GeoStructures are a relatively mature technology whose physical behavior has been studied for over three decades now, including at several pilot sites. However, both technical and non-technical barriers still prevent actual implementation at a large scale. FOLIAGE COST Action aims to gather all needed information to reduce these barriers and foster development by creating a multi-disciplinary network between the different stakeholders (local authorities, communities, developers, designers, academics, contractors, …).

🌍 Energy Walls: Transforming Retaining Structures into Renewable Energy Sources Retaining walls have long been used to support excavations —but what if they could do even more? Introducing ENERGY WALLS: an innovative solution that transforms retaining walls into sustainable energy systems⚡ 🔍 Energy walls are equipped with geothermal tubes connected in a closed-loop circuit to a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP). This setup allows them to function as heat exchangers, efficiently providing renewable heating and cooling. Like energy piles in foundation systems, Energy Walls leverage existing infrastructure to offer both stability and energy generation. Key benefits: ⚡ Dual-purpose functionality—structural support and energy generation. 🌡️ Sustainable energy production 🏗️ Maximize land use by integrating energy systems into essential infrastructure. ♻️ This innovation has the potential to reshape urban landscapes, make renewable energy more accessible, and help us meet ambitious carbon reduction targets. The future of infrastructure is smart, green, and self-sufficient. Are Energy Walls the next big leap in sustainable design? Let's discuss! 🔗 Share your thoughts or tag someone who’s passionate about renewable energy and urban innovation. #RenewableEnergy #SustainableInfrastructure #Innovation #EnergyWalls #EnergyGeostructures #FOLIAGE

🌍 Energy Piles Explained: Foundations That Generate Clean Energy 🔎 Have you ever heard about energy piles? Energy piles are an innovative solution that transforms building foundations into renewable energy systems, offering an efficient way to provide heating AND cooling! ❓ How does it work ❓ Pile foundations are equipped with plastic pipes filled with a fluid (water or water+glycole), connected in a closed-loop system to a geothermal heat pump. By tapping into the stable temperature of the ground, energy piles absorb heat in winter and release it in summer, reducing the need for traditional heating and cooling systems and lowering carbon emissions. 📢 Why are Energy Piles Important? 🔋 Energy Efficiency: By using geothermal energy, buildings can significantly reduce their reliance on fossil fuels for heating and cooling, lowering carbon footprints. 💰 Cost Savings: Once installed, energy piles offer substantial long-term savings for building owners. With geothermal heat pumps achieving a typical coefficient of performance (COP) of 4 or more, each unit of energy used generates at least four units of heating or cooling. Most systems pay for themselves in under 10 years, making them a smart investment. ✌️ Dual Purpose: Energy piles serve as both the building's foundation and as a geothermal energy source, optimizing space and resources on construction projects. 🏗️ Who’s Using Energy Piles? Energy piles are gaining popularity worldwide across commercial, industrial, and residential projects as a key component of sustainable building practices. As we shift toward greener cities and energy solutions, technologies like energy piles will play a critical role in reducing the carbon impact of our built environment. If you're interested in sustainable construction, energy piles are worth keeping an eye on! #SustainableEnergy #EnergyPiles #GeothermalEnergy #GreenBuilding #ConstructionInnovation #RenewableEnergy #FOLIAGE

🌍 Energy Geostructures: Redefining Sustainable Building Practices Energy geostructures are a game-changer for sustainable building. They use the underground parts of buildings and infrastructure to provide heating, cooling, and even energy storage. 🔎 How Do They Work? A fluid (water) circulates in a closed-loop system of pipes embedded in the structure (deep foundation, retaining wall, tunnel, road, bridge), absorbing the ground heat in winter (for heating) and releasing it in summer (for cooling). These pipes are connected to a geothermal heat pump, which enhances energy exchange efficiency by leveraging the ground's stable temperature. 📢 Why Do They Matter? 🌍 Carbon Reduction: Lower reliance on fossil fuels for heating and cooling. 🏢 Space Efficiency: Integrated energy systems save land and space. 💸 Cost Savings: Long-term reduction in energy expenses 🚀 Energy geostructures are a powerful step toward sustainable, renewable buildings and infrastructure! #FOLIAGE #EnergyGeostructures #GeothermalEnergy
