We all know the narrative for the restaurant industry in 2024. Food costs up. Labor costs up. Traffic down. Operator morale challenged. Yet one area has been standing tall during the tumult: off-premises. “It’s been bucking the trend of what’s happening in the rest of the industry,” said Victor Fernandez, vice president of insights and knowledge for Black Box Intelligence™, in an interview about its latest data report. “While all segments have been seeing negative comp sales, delivery is positive. It continues to grow regardless of the slowdown in sales.” https://lnkd.in/gVJxAkNF

“We came up with what we called our value approach, without calling it value,” said Greg Majewski of Craveworthy Brands. “We introduced a new segment where we priced down our menu significantly. … I could afford to take it in the shorts and have negative comps. Basically, I wanted to cry, but my transactions started to go up. I’m now positive transaction and positive content because I reduced price point over 25 percent and consumers are responding to it.” Fascinating piece by Emilee Wentland from a panel moderated by Bernadette Heier at the Restaurant Finance & Development Conference. https://lnkd.in/gYZfQYw7

In 2019, Matthew Bouchner and Will Said, two college friends from the Atlanta area, burst through the doors with MealMe, Inc., a food-delivery price comparison aggregator. But aggregators quickly became ubiquitous. So MealMe, Inc. pivoted. More than once. It started by adding a function to allow consumers to order food directly through the app. Then it swiveled again, to a B2B model, offering its API to other businesses to integrate ordering and inventory technology. Today, MealMe, Inc. provides inventory data from more than 1.2 million restaurants, grocery stores, and retailers. https://lnkd.in/gGfNrbH5
