About us

The Frontier Development Lab (FDL.AI) brings PhD and post-doc researchers from the cutting-edge of AI and data science, and teams them up with their counterparts from the space sector for an intensive eight-week research sprint, based on a range of challenge areas. The results far exceed what any individual could develop in the same time period, or even in years of individual research. FDL applies AI technologies to space science, to push the frontiers of research and develop new tools to help solve some of the biggest challenges that humanity faces. These range from the affects of climate change to predicting space weather, from improving disaster response, to identifying meteorites that could hold the key to the history of our universe. FDL is a public-private partnership with ESA in Europe and NASA in the USA. We work with commercial partners such as Google Cloud and Nvidia who provide expertise and the computing resources necessary for rapid experimentation and iteration in data intensive areas. We have established an impressive success rate for research output over accelerated time periods over the time since we launched the Frontier Development Lab. Research papers are regularly accepted to respected journals, presented at scientific conferences (in both AI and space science domains) and have been featured in multiple media outlets. FDL.AI is an initiative of NASA and Trillium Technologies and leaders in commercial AI such as Google Cloud and Nvidia. www.trillium.tech

Awesome and timely book from our friend and colleague Moriba Jah. The solar system is actually pretty finite and that’s our playground for at least a couple of centuries. Let’s not make the same mistakes of the last 200 years.

🚨 Big Announcement! 🚨   I’m thrilled to share that my upcoming book, SPACE ENVIRONMENTALISM, will be published by One Signal Publishers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster. This is more than a book — it’s a signal cutting through the noise of apathy and indifference, calling for urgent change.   In SPACE ENVIRONMENTALISM, I pull back the curtain on the harsh truths about how space — once a realm of awe and wonder — has become a playground for profit-driven satellite systems, military infrastructure, and unbridled exploitation. The decisions shaping the future of humanity and our planet are being made by a select few, while the costs ripple across Earth and beyond.   But this book isn’t just a critique; it’s a call to action. With a perspective rooted in science, philosophy, spirituality, and social justice, I confront some big questions: - How do we become better stewards of the Earth and Space? - How do we reclaim our personal power and ensure equity and inclusivity in decisions that impact all of us? - And how do we protect the interconnected fabric of life before we achieve our self-extinction?   As a BIPOC voice in the celestial wilderness, I bring a unique lens to this urgent conversation. SPACE ENVIRONMENTALISM is deeply personal, provocative, and unflinching.   To everyone who’s asked me to write a memoir or share my journey — this is it. This is my dharma, my story, my mission, and my promise to empower humanity’s stewards to rewrite the script.   Brace yourselves. Nihil arcanum est (nothing hides). The wilderness is calling, and it’s time to respond.   Nicholas Ciani embraces me for who I am and what I'm here to do, unconstrained. That's special! Thanks Aaron and congratulations to the team for carrying this work forward (I will use it this week at our Futureproof Summit!) We’re getting used to generative AI and its hallucinations; but what makes this special and unique is that it is a physics informed GAN (yup, back from 2021) informed by NOAA ‘Slosh’ models. So it really is a satellite image from the future. Thanks to NASA and MIT for supporting this research. #ai4good

We haven’t shared this work yet because it is such a ‘mic drop’ we wanted to give it due ceremony, however since #COP is running, I thought I’d better drop a note on it. Concentrated solar power (CSP) is a great clean tech solution as it enables deployable solar. You may know one of the criticisms of renewables is that we need deployable energy as the grid demand is lumpy; therefore fossils remain part of the energy mix for those moments when everyone puts their kettles on. In this Frontier Development Lab research in partnership with Artificial Intelligence and Technology Office (AITO), U.S. Department of Energy we used #AI to enhance the dry cooler within a CSP plant so that it reaches price parity with conventional solar - but, deployable. ——- We have to believe that with applied ingenuity we can solve the problems of tomorrow. It’s time to kick the status quo to touch and start believing a better, sustainable future is possible. I have seen it. Congratulations to the team on this and of course our colleagues at Google Cloud, NVIDIA AI and Pasteur Labs & ISI

There's a lot of discussion about whether Earth Observation will have a "ChatGPT" moment. My sense is that it's close. What is possible now, would have seemed magical 10 years ago. The opportunities to combine the full toolbox of AI and space-tech, from twinning, to surrogate modelling, autonomy, continual learning to help build a better future are now here. We have the tools to build a more resilient and secure future. However, there is some kind of translation gap; the excitement that drives millions to buy "LLMs for Dummies" has yet to happen in #AI4EO If you are interested in how academia, the private sector and government can help us close this translation gap, please join us on the 28th in Oxford. This initiative is supported by the European Space Agency - ESA and University of Oxford, Pierre-Philippe Mathieu 🚀, Anna Hirsch-Holland, Christopher Topping https://trillium.tech/css #AI4EO #COP

Futureproofing the UK 🛰 The imperative The United Kingdom faces the challenge of growing industrial capacity and keeping its citizens safe. This balance isn’t for the faint of heart and the solutions aren’t a quick fix. Any future strategy needs to be clear-eyed about the countervailing winds; retrenchment of globalisation, increasing climate-related geopolitical stress (from water, to refugees, supply-chain exposure) ageing infrastructure and population, climate-risk exposure (such as flooding, extreme heat and storms) and techno-sociological exposure which could manifest in as natural risks such as geomagnetic storms. 🌍 Redefining the UK's national trajectory Resilience, then, is not merely about being better prepared or bouncing back from crises; it’s about transformative recovery. 🚀 We believe space-tech and AI are key actors in this better future. Civil Resilience can act as a platform for public and private sector collaboration to develop new services and infrastructure that foster industrial and technological leadership in the way that insight is harnessed from (and via) space for the benefit of society. If these ideas ring-true to you, please join us in Oxford on the 28th of November https://trillium.tech/css This initiative is supported by the CSS (Civil Security from Space) initiative of the European Space Agency - ESA, University of Oxford, Pierre-Philippe Mathieu 🚀, Anna Hirsch-Holland, Christopher Topping. #AI4EO, #COP, #Climate #UK
