About us
Generation Citizen (GC) envisions a country where young people are engaged members of their communities and actively participate in democracy. We believe that every student in the U.S. deserves access to a high-quality civics education that prepares them with the knowledge and skills to understand how government works, think critically about issues that affect their communities, and engage constructively in civic life. GC works to achieve this by partnering with schools to support student-led learning while also advocating for the expansion of comprehensive, nonpartisan civics education nationwide. Through community-based civics, GC provides students with opportunities to explore how government and civic institutions function at the local level. Using a hands-on, inquiry-driven curriculum, students identify issues that matter to them, research different perspectives, and collaborate with local stakeholders to better understand and navigate civic processes. This approach strengthens their ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and participate in civic life in ways that align with their own beliefs and interests. Our student-centered approach equips young people with the tools to engage meaningfully in their communities while respecting diverse viewpoints. Generation Citizen is committed to fostering informed, responsible, and engaged civic participants who are prepared to contribute to a thriving democracy.

The 2024 State of Young People Report, developed in collaboration with over 50 nonprofit organizations, including America's Promise Alliance, provides critical insights into the challenges, hopes, and priorities of young people today. Based on a nationally representative survey of over 1,500 young people, the report explores key issues, including social divisiveness, civic education, artificial intelligence, and mental health. Key findings include: - Desire for Civic Education: 91% of young people recognize the importance of civic learning, yet only 43% feel prepared to participate in civic life. - Social Division: 69% of young people believe the nation is more divided than ever. - Distrust in Adults: Only 23% of young people trust adults in their own communities. - Diminished Hope: Just 19% believe society is headed toward a better future. These findings highlight the urgent need to expand civic education that equips young people with the tools, skills, and confidence to engage meaningfully in their communities. The report recognizes Generation Citizen as a leader in community-based civics, a model that moves beyond textbooks to provide students with real-world civic learning experiences. By investing in civic education and creating opportunities for youth-led engagement, we can empower the next generation to shape a more inclusive, informed, and participatory democracy. Strong communities are built when individuals come together to address shared challenges. At Generation Citizen, we see firsthand how community engagement not only strengthens neighborhoods but also prepares students to become impactful leaders. Our community-based civics curriculum focuses on empowering students to identify local issues and collaborate on solutions. From organizing initiatives to reduce neighborhood litter to advocating for improved school resources, students learn the importance of teamwork and collective action. These experiences give them a sense of ownership and responsibility in shaping their communities. When students see their efforts lead to tangible change, they not only gain confidence but also realize their capacity to make a lasting impact. Community engagement is about more than solving problems; it’s about building connections and creating a shared vision for the future. How have you been working to support your community? Throughout history, real change has always started within communities. From local advocacy to national movements, progress happens when people come together, raise their voices, and take action on the issues that matter most. For generations, collective action has shaped policies, expanded opportunities, and challenged injustice. Whether fighting for better schools, fair housing, or stronger voting rights, the most impactful solutions have come from those closest to the challenges. At Generation Citizen, we believe in the power of civic leadership to create lasting impact. By equipping young people with the tools to address local issues, we empower them to step up, take action, and continue the work of those who came before them. The next generation of changemakers is here—leading with purpose, turning ideas into action, and ensuring that progress doesn’t stop with them. Interested in partnering with Generation Citizen?
