About us

We are on a mission to create a circular economy in orbit. We want to protect the space environment for future generations. Just as the oceans have been polluted by single-use plastics, space is fast becoming the latest environment to be damaged by single-use solutions. We want to change this.

  • Day 4: 4 team members 👩🚀 👨🚀   As well as interns, consultants and project partners, Growbotics has 2 more team members working on the technical and business development alongside Portia and Chris.    Rob has been developing mission concepts into detailed designs for over 10 years. Having trained at established space institutions, he has led several ESA-funded projects at high-growth startups, exploiting innovative optical payloads for scientific and commercial satellite missions. Rob blends rigorous systems engineering skills with his theoretical background in Physics and Mathematics, enabling an interdisciplinary approach that spans from low-level design & simulation, to strategic technology roadmapping.    Jo has a strong foundation in business and psychology, applying this expertise to help organisations within and outside the space sector grow and succeed. With a focus on business development, communications and strategic planning, Jo has supported teams in uncovering market opportunities, developing effective strategies and streamlining operations. Drawing on her experience in market research and business operations, Jo has played a key role in driving impactful initiatives.    🎄 Over the next two weeks, we want to share with you our journey, vision, and the exciting projects our team has been tirelessly working on since our inception in 2022.    Follow us here on LinkedIn for more insights into how we’re shaping the future of the ISAM market: https://lnkd.in/efVu52QG   #12DaysofGrowbotics #SpaceSustainability #SpaceTech

  • 🙋 Day 2: 2 Co-founders 🤹 In 2022, Growbotics was brought to life by two visionary co-founders, Portia Bowman and Chris Brunskill. With over 20 years of experience from companies such as D-orbit, Thales Alenia Space, Satellite Applications Catapult and the University of Surrey, they both share the passion for an in-orbit circular economy. Keep reading to find out more about them: Portia has a background in space systems engineering, business development and strategy. She is an expert in In-Orbit Servicing & Manufacturing and provides consultancy expertise in this area, notably to the UK Government. In her previous role she led the development of an In-Orbit Servicing business line and the creation of the product development approach, route to market and financial modelling. She has experience in all phases of spacecraft system design including numerous feasibility studies and leading the test campaign for the BBR instrument on ESA’s EarthCARE mission. She founded SpaceCareers.uk and as a result of the efforts was awarded a point of light award from the UK Prime Minister. Chris has worked in academic, research and commercial organisations in engineering leadership and programme management roles. He specialises in advanced and novel mission design and systems engineering, has a PhD in space robotics for planetary exploration rovers and has led numerous small satellite missions. He brings a wealth of experience in applied research and development of experimental space systems, including robotic testbeds for planetary rovers and satellite rendezvous and proximity operations. Growbotics is hosting a workshop with the UK space community to help identify ISAM capabilities. This workshop is for anyone with expertise in any area of On-Orbit Servicing, Assembly and Manufacturing across UK Industry, Government and Academia. Continuing from the IOSM Priorities Report (2023), Growbotics is developing an ISAM Capabilities Map for the UK Space Agency, on behalf of UKspace. This initiative aims to systematically analyse the entirety of the landscape within this sector, assessing sovereign capabilities, pinpoint primary strengths and weaknesses, and identify key opportunities for the UK within the ISAM market. There are two identical workshops hosted on the 16th of July at 9:30am and the 25th of July 2pm. Please sign up here: https://lnkd.in/eGWW9Cwg

Last week I had the great opportunity to join a fantastic panel on "Manufacturing in space" at the first #IOSMConferenceUK organised by Satellite Applications Catapult. At TWI, we imagine a future where satellites, spacecraft, space stations and all large structures in space are serviced, repaired, and even manufactured in orbit. The UK space industry has a golden opportunity to pioneer advanced welding, cutting, coating, and inspection processes tailored for the challenges of space. Thanks to Alex Goodhand, Mike Curtis-Rouse for the opportunity and for the great event. A shoutout to the rest of the panel Portia Bowman (Growbotics Space), Andrew Bacon (Space Forge) and Thomas Sinn (DCUBED) for the interesting conversation.
