Dispatches from the Startup Summit at Kenya Innovation Week (KIW): The session on leveraging local corporate financing and funding mechanisms to sustain #Startups highlighted that local corporate-sponsored grant partnerships with local financial institutions are available as alternative funding routes. Speakers noted that the solution is to understand the gaps, innovate solutions that solve them, and foster strong partnerships. Wangui Muna highlighted Heifer’s pivotal role in supporting startup funding through the #AYuTeAfricaChallenge. She emphasized that this aligns seamlessly with Heifer’s mission to uplift communities, focusing on scaling and sustaining youth-led innovation businesses to drive long-term impact in agriculture and food systems. #KIW2024

The #AYuTeChallengeKE Grand Finale Pitching for Track 1 & Track 2 finalists has officially concluded! Congratulations to the 10 incredible innovators who presented their groundbreaking agritech solutions. This journey began on June 6, 2024, Heifer International Kenya, launched the 2024 #AYuTeChallengeKE. After a rigorous application and screening process, 10 finalists—5 each from Track 1 and Track 2—advanced to the Grand Finale. Clarice Bugo-Kionge, Interim Country Director, Heifer Kenya affirmed that Heifer’s approach to promoting the application of technology agriculture is informed by lessons learned in working with smallholder farmers "Our experience of partnering with smallholder farmers has provided us with a unique perspective that tells us that harnessing the innovation and limitless potential of technology can develop solutions tailored to address the unique needs of smallholder farmers” she said. We were also inspired by the words of Eliud Rugut, CEO & Founder of Silo Africa and a 2023 #AYuTeChallengeKE alumnus: "Farming is not for the old generation, farming is cool. You are the solution to Africa's food crisis." A huge thank you to all participants, mentors, and supporters for making this journey a success.
