A recent study highlights the challenges underrepresented minority faculty face in the tenure and promotion process. While racial disparities were not found in early decisions, college-level committees showed more negative votes for Black, African American, and Hispanic professors. Unanimous votes were 44% less likely for these faculty, potentially impacting feelings of belonging. With that said, the HERS community is working hard to create a more equitable academic environment where every voice is valued. Transforming Higher Education Leadership for Equity and Belonging: A persistent challenge in STEM is ensuring that women and gender-diverse students feel a true sense of belonging. Many women, especially women of color, invest years in building scientific expertise only to leave the academy due to systemic barriers and a lack of inclusivity. Why this work matters: Gloria Thomas’s work proves that “Science also needs liberal thinking and humanist perspectives; and an approach to engaging people in a way that everyone should have a voice.” Like Thomas, we're committed to transforming STEM ecosystems and creating a future in which all who wish can reach their full potential in STEM.
