On January 3rd, NHTSA issued a final rule on long-expected updates to the Hybrid III 5th ATD. The changes include updates to the ATD jacket and an improved spine-box design (Docket ID: NHTSA-2024-0093). The more significant update we are awaiting is the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for the THOR-5F female ATD, which, according to the legislative timetable, will be in May 2025. This will bring the introduction of the next-generation female ATDs - THOR-5F - which more accurately represent female occupant physiology and dynamics, one step closer. Wearing a seat belt has always been the single most effective way to reduce the risk of fatality and serious injury in a crash. Rear seat passengers consistently lag behind front seat occupants in seat belt usage, with 2022 data showing 91.6% compliance for front seats compared to 81.7% for rear seats. Today the NHTSA unveiled a new rule to enhance seat belt use and save lives. This welcome update to FMVSS No. 208 mandates rear seat belt warning systems and enhances front seat belt warnings for most passenger vehicles up to 10,000 lbs. Once fully implemented, in 2026 & 2027 it's set to prevent over 500 injuries and save about 50 lives annually. Every step we take to prioritize safety paves the way for safer journeys ahead.
