Wearing a seat belt has always been the single most effective way to reduce the risk of fatality and serious injury in a crash. Rear seat passengers consistently lag behind front seat occupants in seat belt usage, with 2022 data showing 91.6% compliance for front seats compared to 81.7% for rear seats. Today the NHTSA unveiled a new rule to enhance seat belt use and save lives. This welcome update to FMVSS No. 208 mandates rear seat belt warning systems and enhances front seat belt warnings for most passenger vehicles up to 10,000 lbs. Once fully implemented, in 2026 & 2027 it's set to prevent over 500 injuries and save about 50 lives annually. Every step we take to prioritize safety paves the way for safer journeys ahead. Starting September 2027, all new vehicles sold in the U.S. must include rear seat belt alarms, while stricter front seat belt warning rules will take effect by September 2026. The alarms will provide both visual and audible alerts, aiming to boost seat belt usage and reduce fatalities. NHTSA projects the changes will save at least 50 lives annually. Despite progress in seat belt use, rear passengers lag behind at 81.7% compared to 91.6% for front-seat occupants. #SafetyFirst #RoadSafety

NHTSA warns used car buyers about substandard air bag inflators that can cause death or serious injury. These faulty inflators, often made overseas, have led to three deaths and two severe injuries in the past year. Consumers should check vehicle history, use reputable mechanics, and be cautious of cheap online parts. Suspected faulty inflators should be reported to authorities. From 2014-2023, a total of 32 officers were fatally struck by passing vehicles while they were on the scene of an existing crash. Protect yourself and other crash responders with heavy blocking vehicles, implement TIM (Traffic Incident Management), create clear lighting pathways, and wear reflective high visibility apparel. #TrafficSafety #LawEnforcementSafety #FirstResponders #LawEnforcement #NHTSA

What would your fleet’s safety look like with even just a 10% reduction in rear-end collisions? Intellistop can drastically increase eye lead time. According to NHTSA, just 1 additional second of reaction time can reduce rear-end collisions by up to 90%. NHTSA studies also have shown that pulsing brake lamps can give trailing drivers that additional second. #intellistopfacts #staysafeouthere #nhtsastats #nhtsastatistics #roadwaysafety #reduceaccidents

My initial reaction: This is a huge step in the right direction — and long overdue. If this proposal comes into effect, carmakers will finally have to address how car bloat endangers pedestrians. [cont'd] FMVSS has real teeth. Carmakers won't be able to avoid these rules if they are enacted. Still, some caveats: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA proposal doesn’t address -- Harm to pedestrians struck in the torso (NHTSA is only proposing an examination of head injury risk) -- Ways that car bloat harms cyclists -- Big cars’ massive blind spots (esp. harmful to children) -- Car bloat problems that extend beyond safety (pollution, highway damage, etc) Is the new proposal a panacea? No. Is it real progress? Absolutely. ttps://https://lnkd.in/eWXmuk7E
