EU H2020 project fostering inclusive health and wellbeing in small and medium size cities.

About us

IN-HABIT is an EU Horizon 2020 project that aims to foster Inclusive Health and Wellbeing (IHW) in peripheral small and medium size cities (SMSCs). The project will focus on Cordoba (Spain), Riga (Latvia), Lucca (Italy), and Nitra (Slovakia), four SMSCs located in the Southern, Northern and Eastern peripheries of Europe and with populations ranging from 70,000 to 600,000 inhabitants. In each city, the project will mobilise existing undervalued resources (culture, food, human-animal bonds and environment) to increase IHW, with a focus on gender and diversity. The integrated approach will combine technological, digital, nature-based, cultural, and social innovations in selected urban public spaces. These solutions will be co-designed, co-deployed and co-managed with and by local stakeholders. IN-HABIT will focus its actions on underserved areas and vulnerable target groups within each city, and on the integration of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ visionary solutions articulated around heritage and culture (as a nexus for inclusive societies), food (nurturing daily healthier lifestyles), animals (human-animal bonds as new relational urban goods) and art and environment (to connect places and people). This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 869227.

🌍✨ Reflecting on the last few days in Bogotá, we’ve witnessed the power of collective thinking and action in shaping a better urban future. As part of the IN-HABIT journey, we’re continuously exploring how ideas of well-being, rooted in solidarity, mutual aid, and a deep connection to the land, can redefine the urban experience—not just in European cities but in Colombia’s diverse contexts. 💚 A special thank you to Universidad Pontificia Javeriana for hosting us and to everyone in Bogotá and Medellín who welcomed us with open arms. To all the participants, colleagues, and community members who shared their wisdom and experiences—your insights are invaluable in shaping this ongoing journey. Thank you for being part of this conversation and for your continued dedication to building a better future. 🙏 Pontificia Universidad Javeriana Universidad de Córdoba Universidad Católica Luis Amigó Università di Pisa

💡 Insights from Bogotá Children as young as 3 or 4 can not only identify the problems in their communities but also come up with real solutions. 👉 The key isn't just to listen to their voices—it’s to act on their insights. Through collaborative design, Design for Change España shows us that instead of solving problems for them, we should be co-creating solutions with them. This approach goes beyond traditional problem-solving: it fosters creativity, critical thinking, and empowers young people to drive change in the present. 💚🧠

We're live from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá! 🌍 Prof. Mª del Mar Delgado-Serrano from Universidad de Córdoba, Project Coordinator of IN-HABIT, just shared the vision behind the project. At its core, IN-HABIT fosters collaboration between Córdoba, Lucca, Riga, Nitra, and also Bogotá and Medellín to address the common challenge of marginality. While each city has its unique context, marginalized communities share similar struggles, and the solution lies in a unified approach. A key focus is involving local communities at every stage—from planning and implementation to management and follow-up. The goal is to create inclusive transformation plans that empower residents to shape their own futures.💡🌱

🌍 The Universidad de Córdoba team has arrived in Colombia 🇨🇴 to explore the ongoing case studies in Bogotá and Medellín. Their journey begins in Bogotá with a visit to Alto Fucha, diving into the history and origins of the neighborhood👇 💚 This initial connection with the country, where the Las Palmeras (Córdoba) case study is being replicated, offers an opportunity to learn about the resilience of these communities, their fight for environmental preservation 🌳, and their efforts to protect their territory. ✳️ The team is also visiting the local urban gardens 🥬, exploring how these spaces contribute to health, wellbeing, and sustainability. Stay tuned for more updates as we bridge global knowledge and local action! 🌟

Today, Prof. Mª del Mar Delgado-Serrano, Project Coordinator of IN-HABIT from Universidad de Córdoba, participated in the Sustainable Urban Regeneration Lab, organized by Universidad Europea. She shared key insights from the IN-HABIT project and its work in Las Palmeras, Córdoba, highlighting innovative strategies for regenerating urban spaces through co-design. Over the course of these years, IN-HABIT has demonstrated that an open, participatory process can lead to lasting urban transformation.
