Inner City Law Center mourns the loss of former President Jimmy Carter, who dedicated his later years to building homes for those most in need. Carter recognized the importance of safe, secure housing, and his legacy demonstrates how just one person can make an impact that ripples across the nation.

So many heartbreaking statistics in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's just released Homeless Assessment Report for 2024. 771,480 people are homeless every night in the United States. The highest ever recorded. 46% of those 55 or older experiencing homelessness are unsheltered. 32% of people experiencing homelessness are Black (compared to 21% of those living in poverty) 44% of individuals experiencing chronic homelessness reside in California Children experienced the largest increase in homelessness last year—19% of those experiencing homeless are now under 18 (almost 150,000 kids) and another 8% are between 18 and 24. We know what works to end homelessness—targeted prevention efforts and quick connections to permanent affordable housing. This approach is why veteran homelessness continues to decline—dropping by another eight percent in 2024. Unless we create much more affordable housing and start focusing many more resources on this approach for others, homelessness will continue to grow. "Inner City Law Center Litigation Director David Smith said the conditions in this building are among the worst of those they represent." Inner City Law Center and Winston & Strawn LLP have filed a lawsuit on behalf of tenants at Renato Apartments, who have been living in deplorable slum housing conditions. When reporters visited the Skid Row building, what they found shocked them. #slumlord #slumhousing #legalaid #tenantrights https://lnkd.in/gPrPV8Fu

This season is all about gratitude, and we’re so grateful for the amazing attorneys at Cooley LLP, Greenberg Traurig, LLP, and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP for helping staff ICLC's Tenant Power Toolkit clinics during National #ProBono Week! Your advocacy helps keep Angelenos housed and gives tenants the information and resources to fight unlawful evictions.
