Innova Building Advisors is delighted to announce the appointment of Nicole Burger to the position of Director of High-Performance Buildings. In her new role Nicole will be working with multifamily developers, architects, housing finance agencies and professional groups to develop strategic partnerships and define blueprints for sustainable affordable housing that reflect both a unique mission and the elements essential to successful funding applications. In addition, Nicole will be leveraging her expertise as a rater, CPHC and PHIUS Verifier to influence the next generation of sustainable housing professionals through her involvement in training programs focusing on the fertile territory of traditionally underserved communities. Nicole will continue to serve as IBA’s Regional Director - New England, where she provides expert consulting on state and national energy program compliance.  Congratulations, Nicole!

ONWARD AND UPWARD: while we are sad to see him go, we wish Senior Energy Consultant Tim Poole all the best in his new position as the Technical Director with the Northeast Home Energy Rating System Alliance (NEHERS), where he will be responsible for expanding their mentorship program, recruiting candidates from underserved populations and training them as RFIs and HERS raters. It’s an amazing opportunity for Tim and NEHERS is getting a superb mind and a great teacher. https://lnkd.in/eXsVs6BJ EXTREME HEAT. This week marks the start of a heatwave that is expected to set record temperatures from the Midwest to Maine. While extreme heat has been recognized as a health and environmental hazard for many years now by green building programs like Enterprise Green Communities, National Green Building Standard, EarthCraft and LEED, it is still not considered an significant hazard by FEMA to warrant the release of emergency funds and services. While we hope FEMA will soon recognize the danger of extreme heat is immediate -- and increasing due to climate change -- the buildings certified by Innova Building Advisors under the EPA's ENERGY STAR program, the DOE's Zero Energy Ready Homes Program, and Passive House and Net Zero programs are all designed and constructed to withstand extreme weather events of all kinds. A well-insulated and well-air sealed building not only keeps you warm, it keeps you cool; in the words of the immortal Joe Lstiburek, they "keep the outside out and the inside in." Blessed Sacrament Embraces Mass CEC Sustainability Challenge with Innovative Tools - Vote for Them! We're thrilled to announce that Nicole Burger from Innova Building Advisors, LLC, Peter Heller and Lauren Gunther from DiMella Shaffer have joined the Mass CEC Embodied Carbon Challenge; embracing the opportunity to explore and utilize various tools to minimize the environmental impact of their building materials. Blessed Sacrament, a 100-year-old church that will be redeveloped by Pennrose in partnership with the Hyde Square Task Force, is beginning a new chapter with a focus on minimizing its environmental impact. Reusing a historic building like Blessed Sacrament inherently reduces embodied carbon compared to demolishing and building new, plus it preserves an important community landmark. Unlike day-to-day energy use, the carbon footprint of building materials – known as embodied carbon – becomes permanently locked in once the building is constructed. This makes the upfront selection of materials critically important for the environment. As construction practices become more efficient, embodied carbon takes on even greater significance. According to Architecture 2030, embodied carbon is projected to contribute to nearly half of all new building emissions between 2020 and 2050! Empowered by their exploration of embodied carbon tools, the Blessed Sacrament team is eager to share their learnings.
