Let's make immigration detention history
About us
We envision a world where immigration detention no longer exists. And we work with everyone to make that vision a reality. We believe people should be able to live freely while they await the outcome of their immigration case, and we advocate for the human rights and dignity of everyone impacted by immigration detention. IDC is solutions-focused, meaning that we work with lived experience leaders, governments, decision-makers, civil society, UN agencies and other actors to deliver alternatives that benefit migrants, communities and society at large. We are truly global, uniting a coalition of civil society organisations, community groups and individuals from all over the world. While the movement spans continents, we all have a clear purpose: to reduce and ultimately end immigration detention and to promote alternatives.

IDC, Migration Youth & Children Platform and UNICEF are pleased to invite you to a multistakeholder side event of the Global Conference on Justice for Children Deprived of Liberty on "Global Perspectives on Ending Child Immigration Detention". This event will feature panelists from youth, civil society, government and UN agencies to discuss momentums and regressions, and the way forward for global advocacy to achieve GCM Objective 13. Amid increasing global and regional dialogues on migration, children and youth on the move continue to be deprived of liberty by virtue of their status, with at least 77 countries legally allowing the detention of children in their national laws. This side event takes place during the Global Compact for Migration (GCM) Regional Reviews, in the lead up to the 2025 Global Forum for Migration & Development and 2026 International Migration Review Forum, and building upon the Advocacy Brief by the Taskforce for Children Deprived of Liberty. We welcome you to join our discussion where we hope to support global advocacy and mobilisation around ending child immigration detention, and promote community-based alternatives which uphold the rights and welfare of every child on the move. 🗓 18 December 2024 🕛 15:30-16:45 CET 📍 Hybrid (Online and CICG Geneva) Register now: bit.ly/atdevent2024

So pleased to witness the momentum there is in the SADC region towards implementing alternatives to detention (ATD) and ending child immigration detention. Sitting on my way back and reflecting how much commitment and political will there is from some countries to advance this agenda. As one of the workshop attendees said : what we need is action, action, action. Thanks to the government of Zimbabwe, IOM Southern Africa the UN Network of Migration in Southern Africa for such a great event. Thanks also to the governments of Colombia, Belgium, Malawi and Zambia that shared their practices on non detention and/or implementing ATD. Such encoraging examples. Thanks also to Lawyers for Human Rights and UNICEF for presentations on legal standards. It was also my pleasure to present on global trends on immigration detention and Alternatives to Detention and promising practice across the world representing International Detention Coalition and support planning of the workshop. It is important to talk about the southern routes and ATD in Southern Africa which is a region of hope and opportunity. It was also encouraging to see the commitment from the Minister of Home Affain in Zimbabwe and of Amy Pope towards alternatives to detention! Thank you specially to Fitriana Nur (IOM) Prosper Kamarami (Head of Migration Governance Zimbabwe) Laura Arango Colombia, Ellen Verheijden Belgium, Boris Mulengu Zambia, Mercy Kayira Matache Malawi and Nyeletti Baloyi from Lawyers for Human Rights for your leadership on this issue. These were inspiring days in a region of hope and opportunity on ATD and a beautiful country full of hospitality!

Earlier this month, I represented IDC at two global feminist forums - the first ever Feminist Forum on Migration & Displacement, and at the AWID Forum 2024, where I co-organised a session with the Women in Migration Network (WIMN) . Too often gender and migration issues are discussed in silo, so to share these spaces with other feminists working on this intersection was really inspiring and an incredible learning experience. It's increasingly important to bring feminist lenses to our migration advocacy - its the only way we can respond to the nuanced needs of migrant women, girls, and gender diverse people. I’m really proud to be furthering this work with International Detention Coalition and WIMN 💪🏾

❗️ Child immigration detention is a human rights violation and is never in the best interest of the child. IDC and @UNICEF Middle East and North Africa’s new report explores examples from the Middle East and North Africa of how to put children’s best interests first. From dedicated ‘child-friendly spaces’ in Egypt to support networks in Morocco, the MENA region has many examples of promising practices 💡 Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/eqRFeKzE

🌍 More countries are choosing child-friendly alternatives and solutions to immigration detention. From Egypt to Djibouti, this IDC and UNICEF Middle East and North Africa report showcases examples of child-sensitive policies and practices being used in the MENA region. 👉 Remember, immigration detention is never in the best interest of the child and its a form of violence against children. There are kinder, safer, cheaper and better alternatives. https://lnkd.in/eqRFeKzE #TogetherForChange #EndChildDetention #ThereAreAlternatives
