IRE has a new membership subcategory for early-career journalists. Beginning this month, early-career journalists can join IRE for $50/year (compared to the general professional membership rate of $75/year). This category is open to journalists who have five years of experience or fewer. Along with paying less in membership dues, these members will also have lower registration fees for some events. The IRE Board voted unanimously to create this new pricing structure in April, with the goal of better supporting early-career journalists and expanding opportunities for investigative journalism training. Ok. I love journalism. Have for a long long time. But in the last week I was fortunate to head to Anaheim to talk journalism with some of the best damn journalists in the world. And I love that too. Thanks to Investigative Reporters and Editors for yet another wonderful conference. And to anyone who attended my sessions with A.J. Lagoe on investigative writing…stay in touch! Like I said, we all gotta be looking out for one another! I wanna see how your putting some new skills to work!

#IRE2024 did not disappoint. Some highlights: Our entire team travelled to California together. My girl Alejandra Cancino was elected to the IRE board. I led a panel with Alden Loury Matt Kiefer Jessica Alvarado Gamez on our traffic stops reporting. I got some QT with Maya Dukmasova and ran into TCR alum Christie Thompson. And nice touch by Loevy + Loevy, the FOIA hero for journalists! Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen for our team at the Investigative Project on Race and Equity, and to Investigative Reporters and Editors for another quality conference.

I was honored to present Charles “Chuck” Lewis award to the Ring of Honor at the Investigative Reporters and Editors awards luncheon on Saturday. I’ve known Chuck for many years and I know well about his impact on investigative journalism in the U.S. and abroad. Chuck was also honored at the International Luncheon where he was given a Lifetime Achievement. His wife, Pamela and son, Gabriel, attended both. Chuck’s legacy is vast and will live for many generations to come. We are all Chuck’s legacy.

What a joy to be back at the Investigative Reporters and Editors conference! It's my Superbowl, and also, as John Oliver said, my Disneyland. To be honest, once I left newspaper journalism I didn't think I'd be going to IRE anymore. Sad face. When Laura Bennett from the Center for Just Journalism pitched me on appearing on a panel about the public relations machine within police departments, I tried to talk her out of it! But I am so glad I went. Especially for those of us who work from home. It was like a reunion bumping into so many familiar faces and being around that type of newsroom personality I love so much — a perfect mix of nerdy and nosy. And irascible. I was reminded of how much I've really been in the trenches with some of you. And the thing about IRE that you don't always get from other conferences is that it's SO practical. Literally, down to the actual spreadsheet: here are the steps of how to do this type of investigation, here is what the process looks like. I learned so much at panels about international financial crime and the art of business investigations that I can use in my work today. Hugs to you all! IRE awarded the 2024 Don Bolles Medal to the Marion County Record for remaining steadfast and refusing to be silenced after police raided the Kansas newsroom and the home of its publisher last year. Police confiscated the news organization’s computers, hard drives and server, as well as reporters’ personal cell phones — days after a reporter at the paper questioned the local police chief about potential misconduct at his previous job. The raid was quickly condemned by news organizations around the country as intimidation of the press and a violation of the First and Fourth Amendments. The 98-year-old co-owner of the Marion County Record, Joan Meyer, died the day after police searched her home. Her son, Eric Meyer, accepted the Don Bolles Medal on behalf of the newsroom at The IRE Conference last week. The award recognizes investigative journalists who have exhibited extraordinary courage in standing up against intimidation or efforts to suppress the truth about matters of public importance. “Local journalists such as Joan and Eric Meyer and Deb Gruver and Phyllis Zorn are critical to protecting our democracy,” said Don Bolles Medal committee chair AmyJo Brown. “We want them — and the world — to know we support them.” Read the full announcement here: https://lnkd.in/guczn8Q5 #Journalism #FreePress #MarionKansas #MarionCountyRecord #IRE24
