  • What are the critical success factors for virtual care? This study in the Journal of Patient Experience analyzed 11 patient-physician dyads through recorded virtual encounters and surveys. Key findings revealed high levels of patient and clinician satisfaction, with 91% of patients rating telemedicine as effective as in-person visits for addressing health concerns. Clinicians demonstrated strong patient-centered communication, fostering engagement and shared decision-making. Despite positive outcomes, barriers such as technological navigation, connectivity issues, and limited diversity in the study population were noted, emphasizing the need for broader inclusion and technical support. This research underscores telemedicine's potential to deliver meaningful, patient-centered care while identifying areas for improvement. Reference: 1. Bonner TJ, Noss B, Hayes SN, et al. • Call for submissions: Humanism in healthcare has been championed by The The Arnold P. Gold Foundation for more than 30 years, and emphasizes the inherent dignity and worth of every human being. Humanism focuses on clinically excellent care that is kind, safe, and trustworthy.  At its core, humanistic healthcare is grounded in a deep respect for patients’ values, beliefs, and preferences and benefits both clinicians and patients. Illness and healing are deeply personal experiences; humanism in healthcare acknowledges this and emphasizes the importance of grounding care in an environment in which the patient is seen as a true partner with the clinician in the care plan. Patients experience better health and healthcare professionals experience less burnout when humanism is central to care. #HumanismInHealthcare #PatientExperience #HumanExperience

  • How Can Patient Stories Reshape Healthcare and Reduce Burnout? The foundation of exceptional healthcare lies in trust and communication. This study in the Journal of Patient Experience highlights how a seemingly small gesture—a nurse introducing themselves—can build trust and create a positive first impression. By analyzing feedback from thousands of patients across Saudi Arabia, the study found that nurses who consistently introduced themselves saw higher satisfaction scores. With cultural nuances playing a large role, this research underscores the need for nurses to be trained in effective communication that aligns with patient expectations. • What Steps Can Be Taken to Ensure Equitable Care for All NICU Families? Experiencing the NICU as a parent can be incredibly challenging, especially when compounded by racial and ethnic discrimination. This latest study in the Journal of Patient Experience explores how racism impacts families in the NICU. Through surveys and open-ended responses from parents, the study reveals that discrimination often manifests subtly as neglectful care, with parents noting disparities in attention and treatment based on race. The findings highlight the need to address implicit biases and ensure equitable treatment for all families, promoting a more inclusive healthcare environment. • 💡 How can healthcare organizations foster safer, more positive patient interactions? In today’s healthcare landscape -- where incidents of workplace violence are on the rise -- new approaches to patient interactions are crucial. This latest study in The Journal of Patient Experience explores how empathy and self-awareness, paired with traditional de-escalation techniques, can transform patient experiences in ambulatory clinics. This tailored training, which includes empathy-focused and self-reflective content, showed promising results in decreasing patient complaints and improving satisfaction. Reference: Phipps K. • What are the emotional impacts of Long COVID, and how can we address them in patient care? This article examines the broader emotional and psychological toll of Long COVID, revealing implications beyond the individual patient experience. The study shows that Long COVID triggers significant feelings of loss, not just in physical health but also in mental well-being, social connections, and personal identity. The wider implications of these findings underscore the urgent need for a model of care that focuses on emotional resilience and support for patients coping with long-term health challenges. Key Insights: 💡 Loss Across Multiple Domains: Long COVID patients report profound losses in physical health, mental well-being, social connections, family roles, and self-identity, requiring comprehensive care that goes beyond physical symptoms. 💡 Emotional Toll Mirrors Grief: Many patients experience grief similar to the Kübler-Ross stages (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance), highlighting the psychological burden of living with persistent health issues. 💡 Need for Mental Health Integration: The emotional impact of Long COVID underscores the importance of incorporating mental health services, such as counseling and peer support, into treatment plans to address anxiety, depression, and isolation. 💡 Broader Implications for Chronic Illness Care: The findings suggest that healthcare providers can use these insights to improve care for other chronic, invisible illnesses by integrating mental health support, palliative care, and grief counseling into regular care protocols. Transforming Health and Care Experiences with Research and Actionable-Insights (Keynote Speaker, Advising Partner, Health Communication Expert)

Call for Submissions: “Exploring the Relationship between Patient Experience, Health Outcomes, and Value-based Care”. #ICHOM2024 In collaboration with The International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM), The Journal of Patient Experience invites article submissions for this Special Collection. Declining quality and life expectancies, along with rapidly aging population segments, have accelerated interest in Value-Based Healthcare (VBHC). As a transformative patient-centered healthcare delivery model, VBHC is defined as: “the measured improvement in a person’s health outcomes for the cost of achieving that improvement”, rather than the volume of procedures or services. Patient experience intersects with both outcomes and cost as an integral component to advance value in healthcare delivery. The Special Collection will feature the following critical impact areas aimed at disentangling these concepts and demonstrating how patient experience and outcomes together accelerate value. Metrics: Utilizing patient reported health outcomes measures (PROMs) and health patient reported experience measures (PREMs) to advance the value-based health care delivery model. Care delivery solutions: Designing care delivery solutions that are inclusive, equitable, sustainable, and focused on what matters most to individuals and families. Workforce: Supporting the health care workforce by returning health care to its purpose—better health for each and for all. #VBHC #VBC #PatientExperience #PatientEngagement #ValueBasedHealthCare
