We use the law to defend and extend people's rights.
About us
We are Scotland’s legal centre for justice and human rights. We collaborate with our partners to reduce inequality and discrimination, and help others use the law as a tool to achieve social justice. We do this by providing legal services directly to individuals, through our three centres of legal excellence (the Scottish Refugee and Migrant Centre, the Scottish Women's Rights Centre and the Anti-Trafficking and Exploitation Centre) as well as working through JustRight for All, our legal policy, research and training hub.

"People share deeply personal hardships in the hope of shaping policy, only to be met with broken promises and delays. It feels like a box-ticking exercise. Genuine participation is what we’re looking for as a group," says our Participation Manager, Mariam Tuma, in an interview with The Herald Scotland: https://lnkd.in/ej628NCG 🗣️ Communities across #Scotland are growing increasingly frustrated with these unfulfilled commitments. In an open letter to the Cabinet Secretary, JustCitizens highlights key failures: 🛑 The shelving of the Scottish Human Rights Bill 💷 Concerns over the allocation of public funds 🚫 Withdrawal of support from three major Disabled People’s Organisations due to lack of inclusion and unmet needs 🌍 Amid the cost-of-living crisis, barriers to justice, and climate challenges, the call for systemic change has never been more urgent. In the letter - signed by a coalition of community groups, grassroots organisations, and advocacy networks from across Scotland - the group demands: ✅ Genuine community involvement in policymaking ✅ Clear accountability for government promises 🔍 Read more: https://lnkd.in/eUWFUGVK 📅 Their call for the Scottish Government to recommit to truly inclusive and responsive policymaking aligns with the #BringBackTheBill Human Rights Day of Action on December 10 - an urgent reminder to prioritise human rights: https://lnkd.in/etYRw7_r

📣 Survivors of abuse shouldn’t have to pay for their safety, yet many in #Scotland are forced to navigate financial and legal barriers to secure protective orders. This is what the recent Scottish Women's Rights Centre (SWRC) report, “No Cost Barriers: Protective Orders in the Legal Aid System”, has revealed. 🔍 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eKbFZ_r4 What we discovered: ⚖️ Survivors face significant barriers in accessing legal aid, with many contacting 30-50 solicitors to find help. 🛑 Some are forced to represent themselves in court, while perpetrators use delays in proceedings to continue their abuse. This calls for urgent reform in Scotland's legal aid system. 🗣️ As our Senior Associate Solicitor Lyndsay Fleming told The Herald Scotland: "Survivors are facing a barrier to accessing legal aid. It means they're forced to seek their own protection orders. They're falling at the first hurdle when they're going to a lawyer and they're either not qualifying for legal aid or the solicitors aren't doing legal aid because of the crisis. The proposed timeframe for reform is too long. In the meantime, interim measures must be considered to protect those at greatest risk." 🔍 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eN86nHpS #LegalAid #ReformLegalAid #AccessToJustice #WomensRights #Scotland #EndGBV #16days #16daysofactivism #16daysofactivismagainstgenderbasedviolence

📢 Join the Movement! On #HumanRightsDay, we’re marching to #BringBackTheBill and stand up for human rights in Scotland! 🗓️ Date: 10th December 📍 Location: Edinburgh ⏰ Time: 10:00 – 14:00 GMT ℹ️ https://lnkd.in/eZGHW5mw 👉 Why? Millions are living in poverty, food insecurity is rising, and many can’t access justice for human rights breaches. The Scottish Human Rights Bill would ensure stronger protections, the right to food, the right to a healthy environment, and better access to justice. 💪 We need your voice to make this Bill a priority for Scotland's future! “Our Rights. Our Future. Right Now.” These aren’t just words - they’re a call to action. ⏭️ Think of it as a road sign telling us where to go next: toward a Scotland where human rights are stronger and everyone is treated fairly. 🔴 Attend the rally, listen to powerful messages from those directly affected, and show your commitment to #HumanRights. #BringBackTheBill #OurRightsOurFuture #RightNow #Scotland #HumanRightsDay #JusticeForAll #AllOurRights

❗️Femicide is the most brutal and extreme manifestation of violence against women and girls. Yet, the UK news media remains largely silent on framing this as a public health crisis. Why aren’t journalists using their platforms to confront and challenge gender-based violence and systemic inequality? Michaela Makusha explores why the media must do more to shed light on this urgent issue—and why we need to reframe femicide as a crisis that affects us all. "I do not have all the answers for how to solve this, but what I do know is that there is not only a want but a need for more news outlets to investigate the femicide crisis in the UK.
