📣 Survivors of abuse shouldn’t have to pay for their safety, yet many in #Scotland are forced to navigate financial and legal barriers to secure protective orders. This is what the recent Scottish Women's Rights Centre (SWRC) report, “No Cost Barriers: Protective Orders in the Legal Aid System”, has revealed. 🔍 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/eKbFZ_r4 What we discovered: ⚖️ Survivors face significant barriers in accessing legal aid, with many contacting 30-50 solicitors to find help. 🛑 Some are forced to represent themselves in court, while perpetrators use delays in proceedings to continue their abuse. This calls for urgent reform in Scotland's legal aid system. 🗣️ As our Senior Associate Solicitor Lyndsay Fleming told The Herald Scotland: "Survivors are facing a barrier to accessing legal aid. It means they're forced to seek their own protection orders. They're falling at the first hurdle when they're going to a lawyer and they're either not qualifying for legal aid or the solicitors aren't doing legal aid because of the crisis. The proposed timeframe for reform is too long.
