It is launching two new calls for proposals with a budget of €3.4 billion to accelerate the deployment of innovative decarbonisation technologies in Europe, including electric vehicles batteries. For the first time, a €1 billion call for electric vehicle battery cell manufacturing (IF24 Battery) will support projects that can produce innovative electric vehicles battery cells or deploy innovative manufacturing techniques, processes and technologies. Today's call is only one measure in a broader approach to mobilise investment in an area that is essential for Europe's success in the clean energy transition and its competitiveness. It supports companies in targeting investments in Europe with new technologies where advances are still being made. Multiple instruments are needed to overcome some of the economic barriers that the battery value chain in Europe, including its gigafactories, is currently facing. Trade ministers were regularly flying overseas to court investments and companies around the world began competing to lay claim to parcels of real estate to turn into their Canadian bricks-and-mortar factories. However, in recent months, Canada has been hit by a wave of construction pauses, project cancellations and reevaluations leaving key gaps in the national zero-emission vehicle supply chain. “The industry is facing a reality check right now,” says Alla Kolesnikova, head of data and analytics at Adamas Intelligence, in an interview with Electric Autonomy. “All the scaled-down projects repeatedly quote the slowdown of EV projections. Kuinka sähköauton akkupaketin palo saadaan sammumaan: "The test results have shown that internal activation of a water-based fire suppression system inside a battery pack has good potential to have a lasting cooling effect on the battery and to increase the chance of mitigating and preventing thermal runaway propagation. External activation had, in this case, no cooling effect or impact on the thermal runaway propagation, but put out flames on the outside of the battery pack mitigating fire spread from the battery to the surroundings. However, keep in mind that without cooling of the battery and without flames there is a risk that large quantities of flammable gas are released. If these gases could accumulate in enclosed spaces, e.g. the battery compartment, there is a risk of explosion in case of available ignition sources, e.g. sparks from the battery or hot surfaces on the vehicle." #akkupalo #akkusammutus #paloturvallisuus

Markkinatutkimusyritys Adamas Intel pohtii ihmismäisten humanoidirobottien yleistymistä ja sen vaikutusta kriittisten mineraalien ja esimerkiksi akkujen kysyntään. Elon Musk on visioinut, että maailmassa olisi vuonna 2040 jo noin 10 miljardia humanoidirobottia. Adamas Intelin juttukuvituksessa on hyvä pointti - pistetään robotit itse kaivamaan tarvitsemansa kriittiset mineraalit, kun kaivosalan osaajista tulee muutenkin pulaan vanhojen mainareiden eläköityessä: "In the past decade we’ve witnessed a once unfathomable transition towards electric and autonomous vehicles and today, we’re at the outset of a generational shift that will see thousands, millions and possibly even billions of humanoid robots alongside us humans here on Earth by as early as 2040. ...Lithium-ion batteries are ubiquitous in all wireless humanoid robots produced to-date and we expect that will remain the case for at least the next five years, if not the foreseeable future. Production of 10 billion humanoid robots by 2040 (all with Li-ion batteries) would consume the equivalent of 14-times current global annual lithium supply and would necessitate a 7-fold increase in global lithium production capacity by 2040 for robots alone. After years of financial struggles, however, the company last month filed for bankruptcy protection in the US and its employees reportedly seek to move jobs possibly to Korea's battery trio: LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI and SK On. ...“Researchers from LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI chose Northvolt because they were swayed by the better work and life balance, holistic education for their children – compared to Korea’s exam-oriented education – and excellent public welfare systems in Europe as well as higher salaries,” said a former Samsung SDI researcher who requested anonymity. “They also received greater respect from the company and were able to minimize work-related stress.” ...Korean firms prefer Korean nationals due to technology leak issues. The shortage of skilled workers has been a longstanding issue for Korean battery manufacturers in their global expansion. Samsung SDI operates three research centers in Germany and Austria to attract local talent, while LG Energy Solution’s “Frontier Research Lab” program in Europe collaborates with academic and research institutions. Money, money, money. T&E peräänkuuluttaa EU:lta kunnon rahoitusruisketta akkuteollisuuteen: "The EU’s ultimate Achilles heel is its failure to put its money where its mouth is, and deliver a sizable green investment fund to scale cleantech amidst fierce competition. Batteries might be abundant and cheap today, but not having any locally embedded expertise puts Europe at a significant resilience risk. China’s current success has been in part enabled by the government's cheap credit lines to battery, component and mineral producers. The US IRA’s nominal budget of $369 billion is likely closer to $1.2 trillion, with almost two-thirds of this going to the battery supply chain. All the EU has offered to date is a €3 billion Battery Fund, with the first call more than a year late. Europe’s tight fiscal rules are suffocating its own clean and digital tech goals, and must be revised. Tuohon sitten vielä päälle kaikki Trump 2.0 -toimet ja sähköautojen tukien ym. karsimiset, niin voi EV-kehitys USA:ssa näyttää aika mielenkiintoiselta lähivuosina: "Forty-six percent of current electric vehicle (EV) owners in the United States told McKinsey & Co. they would likely switch back to an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle during the firm’s 2024 Mobility Consumer Global Survey. ...Thirty-five percent of respondents said an inadequate charging infrastructure was one reason they wanted to switch. Other top answers included total costs of ownership and too much impact on long-distance trips.
