One Community. One Commemoration. One Year. Last night, we stood together in solidarity, honoring the lives lost and reaffirming our unwavering commitment to the State of Israel. The powerful stories shared by Yael Alexander, mother of hostage Edan Alexander; Inbal Rahaf, an Israeli resident who was at a kibbutz when the attacks began on October 7, 2023; and Ziv Rahamim, an IDF soldier, were both heartbreaking and inspiring. It was deeply meaningful to unite as a community, especially as we were reminded last night that Jews are responsible for one another. We remembered those we lost, honored the heroism we’ve witnessed, and strengthened our resolve—Am Yisrael Chai!

More than 300 days ago, #Tenafly's EDAN ALEXANDER was kidnapped into #Gaza along with 250 other innocent people. He and 7 other U.S. citizens have not been seen or heard from, since. Every day, Amnesty International shamefully ignores their own stated mission by failing to visit the prisoners or effectively lobby for their release. So proud to have represented Kaplen JCC on the Palisades with Steve Rogers, our CEO, at the executive seminar: “Navigating Israel and the Rise in Antisemitism,” hosted in partnership between JCC Association of North America, Brandeis University, and Boundless Israel. Along with leaders from dozens of other JCCs, we navigated through a curated journey of context and perspective followed by skills building and idea generation. We heard from scholars, historians and community leaders who shared their insights and personal stories, painting a vivid picture of resilience, resistance, and reimagination. We discussed the importance of leadership and learned techniques to address polarization and creating conditions for constructive dialogue. The Kaplen JCC is proud to stand in our values and work to combat Jew-hatred as we also continue to stand up against all forms of hatred. We are the singular community organization that is a destination for the Jewish community to engage in joyful celebration, while also being a place that welcomes and engages people of all faiths and backgrounds. This uniquely positions the Kaplen JCC to meet the needs of moment to both advance Jewish peoplehood and identity building; and, strengthen relationships across the community of all our neighbors as friends and allies. Proud of these articles that captured the seminar experience. We are firmly committed to the doing the work to advance changes. https://lnkd.in/eqWDCDxf https://lnkd.in/eVsSPXWb

Wonderful d’var torah from the Russell Berrie Foundation on the work they are doing for tikkun olam.
Jews around the world this week will read a portion of the book of Numbers that tells of Balak, the Moabite king, fearing the military might of the Israelites. To stave off an attack, he orders the prophet Balaam to curse the Israelites. God intervenes, rendering Balaam unable to say the curses; ultimately, he can only prophesize that the Israelites are “a people that dwells alone not reckoned among the nations.” In these dark times, CEO Idana Goldberg find this characterization to be “both blessing and curse depending on the lens through which one views it. As a portrayal of the curse of isolation, it can serve as a call for us to reject prophecy as destiny and build bridges of allyship and deep mutual commitment. As a depiction of the blessing of solidarity, it impels us to ensure there is a place in the Jewish community for all who seek it." Read her full commentary and learn more about grantees like Interfaith America and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs that are bridging across diverse groups to create cultures of tolerance, respect, and mutual support and safety within today’s fractured communities and campuses. Our CEO Steve Rogers and other JCC leaders share the deep impact felt after recent trips to Israel. Thank you all for bearing witness.
In moments of crisis, showing up can speak volumes. In November and again in January, amidst the echoes of October 7, a determined group of JCC Movement leaders—both professional and lay—traveled to Israel. Their mission? A profound demonstration of solidarity, rooted in the conviction that as pillars of the largest platform for Jewish engagement in North America, it was essential to show up, bear witness, and share the truth of the October 7 atrocities with the world. Their journey was more than a gesture; it was a powerful commitment to support Israelis of all backgrounds and to ensure the world hears the truth about the atrocities of October 7. These JCC leaders, having witnessed the reality on the ground, returned home with stories that needed to be told. Stories of pain, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of community. Some of these leaders have since poured their experiences into moving reflections, capturing not just the events they witnessed but the emotions that cannot be conveyed in headlines alone. This is not just an invitation to read their reflections; it's a call to witness, understand, and share the depth of their experiences.
