Edmondson who in a nutshell defines it as “an absence of interpersonal fear on teams.” This means that a psychologically safe environment is one where people operate without the anxiety that stems from the potential of toxic or distressing social interactions. But do we really need a dictionary definition of psychological safety to recognize when we feel or don’t feel psychologically safe? The reality is that it’s a feeling we know both instinctively and intimately. It affects everyone from the frontlines to the C-Suite and is exacerbated by pressures both within and outside the workplace. As Los Angeles enters another week of battling fires, remember that many of the fire fighters are incarcerated people and it's a good time to do a gut check on what equity should look like during natural disasters. According to The Associated Press, "over 1,100 California inmates have been working around the clock in challenging conditions — including howling winds and toxic smoke — to help Cal Fire battle the Eaton and Palisades fires, the largest and most destructive of about a half-dozen fires that burned in the Los Angeles area in the past two weeks." Many of these inmates who contributed firsthand are unable to use their fire fighting experience once they make it out of prison and face countless barriers to establishing employment.
