Currently/formerly incarcerated girls/women in TX fighting to end the incarceration/systematic devaluing of girls/women.
About us
Lioness: Justice Impacted Women’s Alliance is an organization led by currently and formerly incarcerated girls and women in Texas with the purpose of ending the incarceration and systematic devaluing we experience within the Texas criminal legal system. We envision a society where we, as well as all gender expansive people, are spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically free from all forms of violence and harm in the criminal legal system. Our vision can be achieved through radical advocacy, leadership development, community building, grassroot organizing and civic engagement. We believe that lived experience is the guiding force to change. We believe in honoring each other’s differences while striving to bring one unified voice of currently and formerly incarcerated girls, women and gender expansive people in Texas into all spaces. We believe that jails and prisons by nature perpetuate harm and violence.

This Thanksgiving, we pause to reflect, honor, and give thanks. We recognize that this day carries a complex history, rooted in the colonization of Indigenous lands and the erasure of Native cultures. Today and every day, we honor the strength, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous communities, especially Indigenous women who have long been at the forefront of justice and advocacy. We thank you, our Lioness family, for standing with us and building a community of compassion and empowerment. #Thanksgiving #IndigenousPeoplesDay #Gratitude #LionessJustice #JusticeForAll

Our post-lunch speakers brought the energy this afternoon! We learned about the long-term brain health of children, confronting female stereotypes in the criminal legal and mental health systems, and evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders.

I just wrapped up an incredible week at the Texas Judicial Commission on Mental Health Summit in Allen, TX—a gathering I’ve been honored to participate in as a collaborative council member since its inception 8 years ago. This year was especially meaningful as I represented Measure in collaborating with Lioness Justice Impacted Women's Alliance on a powerful panel: Dangerous Women: Confronting Stereotypes in the Criminal Legal and Mental Health Systems. During the panel, we addressed the harmful biases and stereotypes that disproportionately impact girls and women—focusing on issues like adultification, personality disorders, and addiction. Together, we shared actionable strategies to challenge these biases and pave the way for more equitable, person-centered systems. I’m incredibly grateful to work alongside such inspiring change makers who are deeply committed to advancing justice and equity for all #jcmhsummit2024

Our Executive Director, Jennifer Toon, spoke on the importance of updated reentry resources and the usefulness of JCMH’s Innovation map.
Our Commission Meeting is underway in Allen! Today we are celebrating JCMH Co-Chair Judge Barbara Hervey, who will retire at the end of the year. This is her final Commission Meeting and we commemorated the occasion with cake. She has been a Co-Chair of the JCMH since it was created in 2018. Thank you, Judge Hervey, and best wishes!

We joined more than 65 organizations in calling on Congress take immediate action to address the overdose crisis by passing the bipartisan Reentry Act (H.R.2400/S.1165) and the Due Process Continuity of Care Act (H.R.3074/S.971). These bills represent one of the strongest opportunities for Congress to increase public safety and improve public health outcomes nationwide. Read our letter here: https://lnkd.in/eP-VnDfz
