As we gather this Thanksgiving, #MasonScience extends heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated faculty, staff, and students. 💚💛 We would also like to take this time to acknowledge the land George Mason University occupies. At the place George Mason University occupies, we give greetings and thanksgivings to these Potomac River life sources, to the Doeg ancestors, who Virginia annihilated in violent campaigns while ripping their lands apart with the brutal system of African American enslavement, to the recognized Virginia tribes who have lovingly stewarded these lands for millennia including the Rappahannock, Pamunkey, Upper Mattaponi, Chickahominy, Eastern Chickahominy, Nansemond, Monacan, Mattaponi, Patawomeck, and Nottaway, past, present, and future, and to the Piscataway tribes, who have lived on both sides of the river from time immemorial. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/e6STXHnE

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, we highlight an amazing act of kindness from our #MasonScience community! Back in September during ScienceConnect, students, faculty, and staff handmade blankets to be donated to three local shelters. 🧶 Last month, our Office of Academic and Student Affairs graciously presented the blankets to a representative from one of the local shelters. 🌟 This generosity reminds us what this season is all about—community, care, and giving back. Remember to spread warmth and kindness this season. 💚💛 #MasonScience #MasonGives #SpiritOfGiving #CommunityImpact

Today's #FacultyFriday highlights computational and data sciences associate professor, Anamaria Berea, who was recently featured on George Mason University's Access to Excellence podcast. In this episode, Berea discusses her research on Mars settlements and Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP) as she and President Gregory Washington debate the question on everyone’s mind: is there life beyond Earth? Her work combines data analysis and the study of complex systems to explore the search for extraterrestrial life and understand the challenges of finding life in outer space. By analyzing biosignatures, Berea works on identifying potential signs of life on exoplanets, contributing to the broader scientific efforts to explore the unknowns of the universe. 🌍 George Mason University is at the forefront of tackling climate change's impact on public health. With a $3.69M The National Institutes of Health grant, the Research and Engagement for Action in Climate and Health (REACH) Center brings together George Mason experts from across the university, including Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Earth scientists Jim Kinter and Daniel Tong, alongside partners from The George Washington University, Howard University, and the Environmental Defense Fund. The center's goal is to improve public health, especially in underserved areas, through data-driven solutions developed by experts from various fields. With this project, local leaders will have access to valuable climate information, and it will also facilitate new research that combines health and the environment. Southern University System students took on forensic research at George Mason University’s outdoor body farm this summer, gaining hands-on experience in decomposition science through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Summer Research Program. From maggots to microbes, Brittney Sylvester and LaTavia Williams pushed past their comfort zones to study decomposition alongside George Mason experts, Mary Ellen O'Toole, Georgia Williams, and Emily Rancourt, exploring forensic science in a way no textbook could provide. Their collaboration highlights the importance of diversity in national security research and the powerful impact of experiential learning.
