A recent study from MIT Sloan School of Management's Danielle Li shows female employees are 14% less likely to be promoted than male colleagues, despite outperforming them and being less likely to quit. Today, we celebrate the remarkable Annie Jump Cannon, born on December 11, 1863. A pioneering astronomer, Cannon developed the Harvard Classification Scheme, revolutionizing the way we categorize stars based on their temperatures and spectral types. Her meticulous work led to the classification of over 350,000 stars, and she was the first woman to receive an honorary doctorate from Oxford University. Cannon's contributions to astronomy not only advanced our understanding of the universe but also paved the way for future generations of women in science. On this day, we honor Ada Lovelace, born on December 10, 1815, and often regarded as the world's first computer programmer. Her visionary work on Charles Babbage's early mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine, laid the foundation for modern computing. Lovelace’s notes on the engine included what is now recognized as the first algorithm intended for implementation on a machine. Today, we celebrate the incredible legacy of Grace Hopper, a true pioneer in computer science! Born on December 9, 1906, Hopper was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy and a trailblazer for women in tech. She played a crucial role in the development of COBOL, one of the first high-level programming languages, and famously coined the term "debugging" after removing a moth from a computer.
