#CHWSpotlight “Because of Betty, mothers and children in our community are living healthier lives. Tusiima nyo nyo nyo – we are very, very grateful.” In Kamugombwa Village, Uganda, Betty, a community health worker (#CHW), is a trusted friend and lifeline for families like Aliyah’s. Equipped with a medical kit and smartphone, Betty delivers essential maternal and child healthcare, ensuring healthier lives for her community. Her dedication reminds us of the incredible impact CHWs have in bridging gaps in healthcare access. What does it look like to throw out a process, and start from scratch? A few years ago, our Quality Assurance (QA) team realized our acceptance testing wasn’t working. QA engineers weren’t involved in developing code changes, and needed to understand them very quickly, creating overwhelm, burnout, and bottlenecks. Then in 2022, the team discovered the term "Quality Assistance" - supporting developers with tools and guides to have quality in mind from the beginning. It means as the #CommunityHealthToolkit evolves, it maintains long-term quality and sustainability. You can hear the full story from our QA Engineer Lorena Rodriguez at the Quality Assurance Global Summit kicking off next week. Fantastic insight from Devex on the #SafeMotherhood Program’s work addressing maternal mortality - a big priority for us at Medic. In Nepal, we worked with the Ministry of Health and Population and NGOs to build a digital health app, with the Community Health Toolkit, to tackle exactly this issue. Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) play a critical role in monitoring pregnant women to safe delivery, and the app supports them in this process. It sends SMS appointment reminders to both expectant mothers and the FCHVs who care for them, so that no one misses an important check-up. It’s used at facilities and outreach clinics, and track patients whether at home or the hospital. We commend any program that shares our determination to improve access to care for mothers, at a time when they need it most. A fantastic new Stanford Social Innovation Review article by Doug Galen, Co-Founder and CEO of Rippleworks. We have been extremely fortunate to have a group of collaborative funders for many years who provide both investment + strategic guidance to accelerate and sustain our global impact. Doug's 5 key messages resonate deeply with our experience: 1️⃣ Collaboration can encourage funders to explore new areas of social innovation not previously considered. 2️⃣ Proactively sharing diligence reduces the burden for everyone. 3️⃣ Capital + operational support is a recipe for success. 4️⃣ Without an agenda, funders work together and build mutual trust. 5️⃣ Initial support is a catalyst, but organizations are hitting a fiscal cliff without sustained investment. Thanks Skoll Foundation! The Ministry of Health, Kenya's 🇰🇪 exceptional vision and dedication to digitalizing/transforming community health to achieve #UHC inspires us. We're thrilled that the #CommunityHealthToolkit continues to meet Kenya's evolving needs to professionalize CHWs. (As well as neighboring 🇺🇬 Uganda and 🇹🇿 Zanzibar, and West African nations of 🇹🇬 Togo, 🇨🇮 Côte d'Ivoire, and 🇲🇱 Mali!) Cheers to our Kenyan co-creation allies Living Goods, Lwala Community Alliance, CMMB Kenya, AMREF, and ENAI - Africa as we work together as the CHU4UHC platform of partners.
🕊️ 🗞️ Good News D̶e̶c̶e̶m̶b̶e̶r̶ January: Medic & Living Goods 🗞️🕯 Continuing our series sharing the phenomenal accomplishments of the Skoll community, two #SkollAwardees were instrumental in launching Kenya’s national electronic community health information system (eCHIS) nationwide this year! Living Goods was the Ministry of Health’s lead technical partner in expanding the system after a successful pilot. The eCHIS tool was based on their SmartHealth app, built on Medic’s Community Health Toolkit platform. The system is now deployed to 95,000 Community Health Wokers in 47 counties! 🌍💉 eCHIS is a comprehensive decision-support tool that enables consistent quality of care for patients and supports data collection and reporting in near real time. 📊🩺 Join us in celebrating this advancement for the health of Kenyans! 🎉🇰🇪👏🏾 #GoodNewsDecember #Medic #LivingGoods #eCHIS #PublicHealth #Kenya #HealthInnovation
